Introduction WordPress Website Templates
Over the previous 10 decades, I have used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I had been using MyThemeShop, which was fairly good. But I had to perform a great deal of customization to allow it to do and work how I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I’ve discovered in a decade . I had been blown away and am now moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. WordPress Website Templates
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there isn’t that good, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this circumstance, this was a mistake. The motif now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the qualities. I will be covering the premium version of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you read this and so are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t want running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built-in.
A lot of hooks and filters which make it great for developers.
Great active support from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the subject has been around long enough that what I Googled during the setup process was found inside a few seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a new theme right out of the box without any customizations to see how quickly the base is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a whole lot of big files, but that is not the case. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure every record loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents is not as important. But the size is! Take a look at a few of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about performance! And I have Seen the same during each of the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file included. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming round the corner, we could expect that to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate anything you are not using to guarantee they do not load on your site. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are interested, I am using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no longer need to use a young child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this exact minute and not lose one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. WordPress Website Templates
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a great deal of options. You are able to change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default to a full width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these options are permitted from the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But let me show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also made by the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to add responsive columns into any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Insert Customized classes
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also catch his amazing WP Display Posts plugin also. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also get it show past modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to do all kinds of things concerning design. Think of it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I’m in reality utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For those Of you who are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the entire theme that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I invested a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a kid theme. All the customizations were created with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could create a replica of woorkup for the new GeneratePress site library. I’m happy to let you know that now you can install my woorkup motif on your own GeneratePress site with only a click! It is called the Marketer theme. Get started with a great blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum website, as I do not use it for much. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum website, as we simply use it to our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. WordPress Website Templates
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under an hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my sites for this (which includes some EDD e-commerce websites ). After I have my 9 websites all running in GP with no child themes, my life will be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing is, I now have a billion more options to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users who want to be able to customize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a great foundation to make it load fast.
Because Of that, people who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Want something which will instantly look perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to produce a fashion blog, you may be happier choosing a niche theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a lot easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones if you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will almost certainly need to go in and customize matters. And though the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular features that explain why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Performance, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient as you’ll have the ability to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you decent possibilities, but should you have GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize pretty much all about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you may configure comprehensive settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to add
Likewise, The Typography area enables you to control the font to get every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also get a detailed region to control the color of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you a lot more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This level of detail may be a little overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But once you realize the way the preferences come together, you will have full control over how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All its attributes, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded topics can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you a sense, I conducted a small test.
First, I put up a vacant site using a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the same test site without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You perform the exact same test with different themes, you are going to continue to see that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. WordPress Website Templates
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature that allows you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page building. It lets you create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you could pick and choose what characteristics you want to trigger.
That Way, you don’t have to slow down your site for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any among the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most themes, every page and post will use the very same settings for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — however you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Design meta box for each and every post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured image, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are in a position to produce the proper baseline for your page builder layout, making it effortless to create custom articles as needed. WordPress Website Templates
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I feel you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and upgrades after the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress after the initial year without renewing — you won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You consider that the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic value.
As I said, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your requirements for your market from day one.
But If you are willing to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you may even be able to locate a starter site that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will locate. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no problem making your website load in under one second. WordPress Website Templates
