Background WordPress Website Design Templates
Over the previous 10 years, I have used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, which was fairly good. However, I had to do a great deal of customization to make it perform and operate the way I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I have discovered in a decade . I was dismissed and am moving all of my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review under. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. WordPress Website Design Templates
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for many years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of stuff on there isn’t that great, or not encouraged for long. However, in this case, that was a mistake. The theme now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should get the job done. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the features. I’m going to be covering the superior edition of the subject, since it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not need running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of this customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built in.
Tons of hooks and filters which make it good for developers.
Great active support from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their site, the theme has existed long enough that everything I wholeheartedly during the setup process was found inside a few seconds in their forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time for the fun part! I test a brand new theme right from the box without any customizations to see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure every record loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the amount of documents is not as important. However, the dimensions is! Take a peek at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen the same during each of the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file contained. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the cornerwe could expect this to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you are not using to guarantee they do not load on your site. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built-in, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are curious, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more have to use a young child theme. This makes my life so much easier. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this exact moment rather than lose a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. WordPress Website Design Templates
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a lot of options. You can alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a full width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, lots of these choices are permitted by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But let me show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the same programmer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Insert custom courses
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You might want to Also catch his incredible WP Display Posts plugin also. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also get it show last modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you perform all kinds of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I’m in fact utilizing GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For all those Of you who are regular readers, you probably did not even notice I changed the entire motif that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent annually customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I invested a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a child theme. Each of the customizations were made with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could make a replica of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress blog library. I’m happy to let you know that now you can install my woorkup theme on your own GeneratePress site with only a click! It’s called the Marketer theme. Get started with a fantastic blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal website, as I do not use it to get much. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a couple plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum site, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast. WordPress Website Design Templates
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all my websites to it (which includes some EDD e-commerce websites ). Once I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP with no child topics, my life will be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing isI now have a thousand more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that want to be able to personalize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a great foundation to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll normally pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Need something which will immediately appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you want to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier picking out a market theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a great deal simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll most likely will need to go in and personalize things. And while the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is so common.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient as you’ll have the ability to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize pretty much everything about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design area, you can configure comprehensive settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography place lets you control the font to get each and every element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also get a detailed area to control the colour of each and every element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization options from the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you are a beginner. But once you understand the way the settings come together, you will have full control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All its attributes, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on exceptional performance and tidy code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, and it is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few poorly coded topics can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you an idea, I conducted a little test.
First, I put up an empty website using a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the exact same test site without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with other topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. WordPress Website Design Templates
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature that allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you could pick and choose exactly which characteristics you would like to trigger.
That Way, you don’t need to slow down your site for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any among those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most topics, every page and post will use the very same settings for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Layout meta box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re able to produce the correct baseline for your page builder design, making it effortless to create custom content as needed. WordPress Website Design Templates
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you’re serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you almost as many settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on infinite sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades after the initial year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress after the initial year without beating — you just won’t receive any more updates).
When You believe that the normal premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great value.
As I mentioned, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your niche out of day one.
But If you are willing to spend time changing settings, GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to locate a starter website that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will find. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one second. WordPress Website Design Templates
