Background WordPress Web Templates
Within the past ten decades, I have used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was using MyThemeShop, which was fairly good. However, I had to perform a lot of customization to allow it to do and work how I needed it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the best WordPress theme I have discovered in a decade . I had been blown away and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. WordPress Web Templates
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of stuff on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this circumstance, this was a mistake. The motif currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at a number of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the superior edition of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not want running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font wonderful built-in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it good for developers.
Excellent active support from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the subject has been around long enough that everything I wholeheartedly throughout the setup process was found inside a couple of seconds from their forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I always test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to see how fast the base is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but that is not the case. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure that every record packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of documents is not as important. But the size is! Have a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I have Seen exactly the same during all the premium add-ons. They are as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file included. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe could expect that to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate whatever you aren’t using to ensure they don’t load on your website. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built, I felt right at home with this. Everything ought to be made this way.
If You’re curious, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no longer have to use a young child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this very moment rather than shed one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make it possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress website. WordPress Web Templates
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a great deal of options. You can alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default option to a complete width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, lots of these options are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by the same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Insert Customized classes
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You May Want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also have it show past modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all sorts of things in terms of design. Think of it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of those that are regular readers, you likely did not even notice I changed the whole motif that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty fast, but I spent a great deal of time customizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I don’t have a child motif. All the customizations were made using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can create a copy of woorkup to your new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to let you know that now you can put in my woorkup motif in your GeneratePress website with just a click! It’s known as the Marketer theme. Get started with a fantastic blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum site, as I don’t use it for much. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the entire appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a few plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal site, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. WordPress Web Templates
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my websites for this (which includes some EDD e-commerce sites). After I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP without any child topics, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing is, I now have a thousand more choices to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users that wish to be able to personalize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, people who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Need something which will immediately appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you want to create a style blog, you might be happier picking out a market theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a lot simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you want it to, you’ll most likely need to go in and customize matters. And though the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular features that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you will have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you decent options, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize nearly everything about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design region, you may configure comprehensive settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like how many widgets to include
Similarly, That the Typography place enables you to control the font for every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also get a detailed region to control the colour of each and every element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This level of detail might be a little overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But as soon as you understand the way the settings come together, you’ll have complete control on how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All of its features, GeneratePress always has a focus on exceptional performance and tidy code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, which is about as small as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded topics can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I set up an empty website using a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test site without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% fewer
If You perform that same test with other themes, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. WordPress Web Templates
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create separate”sections” on a webpage, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you could pick and choose exactly which features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow down your site for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you needed to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any among the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most topics, every post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — but you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Layout meta name box for every single page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are able to create the proper baseline for your own page builder design, making it easy to create custom articles as needed. WordPress Web Templates
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I believe you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you almost as numerous settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, which provides you use on infinite sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the first year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress after the initial year without renewing — you won’t receive any more updates).
When You consider the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great price.
As I said, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your niche from day one.
However, If you are willing to spend time changing settings, GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you may even be able to find a starter website that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s among the fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will locate. Therefore, if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no problem making your website load in under one second. WordPress Web Templates
