Background WordPress Themes Woocommerce Responsive
Over the past 10 decades, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, that was pretty excellent. However, I still had to do a lot of customization to make it do and work the way I wanted it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the best WordPress theme I have found in a decade . I had been blown away and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into precisely why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review under. And if you’re wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as many other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. WordPress Themes Woocommerce Responsive
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there isn’t that great, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing something right here.
I Really installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the features. I will be covering the superior edition of the subject, since it’s worth . In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not need running. This is one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of the customizer previously, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font wonderful built-in.
A lot of hooks and filters that make it good for programmers.
Great active support from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has existed long enough that what I Googled during the setup process was found within a few seconds from their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box with no customizations to see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a lot of big files, but this is not the case. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure that every file packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of documents isn’t as important. However, the size is! Have a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen exactly the same during each of the premium add-ons. They’re as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file contained. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe can anticipate that to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate whatever you aren’t using to ensure they do not load on your site. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built-in, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be made this way.
If You are curious, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is that I no longer have to use a young child motif . This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this exact moment and not lose one customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. WordPress Themes Woocommerce Responsive
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a lot of alternatives. You can change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default to a full width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled from the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. But let me show you couple which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to add responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Add Customized classes
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You might want to Also grab his incredible WP Show Posts plugin also. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also get it show last modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you perform all kinds of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of you who are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice that I changed the whole theme that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty fast, but I invested a lot of time customizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I don’t have a kid motif. All the customizations were created with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could make a copy of woorkup for the new GeneratePress blog library. I am happy to let you know that now you can put in my woorkup motif in your own GeneratePress site with just a click! It’s known as the Marketer theme. Get started using a great blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum site, since I don’t use it for much. As you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the entire appearance 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a couple plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal site, as we just use it for our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. WordPress Themes Woocommerce Responsive
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under one hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my sites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child topics, my life is going to be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I now have a billion more options to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users who wish to have the ability to personalize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a great base to make it load fast.
Since Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Want something which will immediately appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to create a style blog, you may be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a great deal easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will almost certainly will need to go in and personalize matters. And while the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient because you will have the ability to see all the changes that you make in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize nearly everything about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Layout area, you can configure comprehensive settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to add
Similarly, The Typography place lets you control the font for each and every element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also receive a detailed region to control the colour of each and every element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But as soon as you realize the way the preferences come together, you’ll have complete control on how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All its attributes, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on excellent performance and tidy code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as small as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few poorly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you an idea, I ran a small test.
First, I set up a vacant site using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test website without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You perform that same test with different themes, you are going to continue to see that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. WordPress Themes Woocommerce Responsive
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature that allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own design and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you can select and choose exactly which features you would like to activate.
That Way, you don’t have to slow your site down for a feature that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The last, you had to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Site Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most topics, every page and post will use the very same configurations for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Design meta name box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, post featured image, article title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re in a position to produce the correct baseline for your page builder design, which makes it easy to create custom articles as needed. WordPress Themes Woocommerce Responsive
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you almost as numerous configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly affordable. It costs only $39.95, which provides you use on infinite sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and updates after the initial year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the first year without renewing — you just won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You consider the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic price.
As I mentioned, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your needs for your market out of day one.
But If you are ready to spend some time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to locate a starter site that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes you will find. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good decision.
