Background WordPress Themes
Over the past ten decades, I have used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, that was pretty good. However, I still had to do a great deal of customization to allow it to perform and operate the way I wanted it to. A few weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I had been dismissed and am moving all of my websites to GeneratePress. I will go into exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review under. And if you’re wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as many other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. WordPress Themes
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there is not that good, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The motif currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the features. I will be covering the premium edition of the theme, because it’s worth . In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not want running. This is one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built-in.
A lot of filters and hooks that make it great for programmers.
Great active service from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be incredible. Besides have good documentation on their site, the subject has existed long enough that what I wholeheartedly throughout the setup procedure was found within a couple of seconds from their forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I always test a new theme right from the box with no customizations to just see how fast the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but this isn’t the situation. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring every file packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of documents is not as important. But the size is! Take a look at a few of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen the same during all the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file included. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we could anticipate that to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to guarantee they don’t load on your website. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built-in, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You’re curious, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more have to use a Child motif . This makes my life much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this exact moment and not shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make it possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. WordPress Themes
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post you have a great deal of alternatives. You are able to change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a complete width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these options are permitted by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. However, allow me to show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by precisely the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Add Customized courses
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You might want to Also catch his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also get it show past modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you do all kinds of things in terms of design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I am in fact utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For all those Of those that are regular readers, you likely did not even notice I changed the entire theme that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was already pretty fast, but I spent a great deal of time customizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a child motif. Each of the customizations were made with the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can create a replica of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to let you know that you can now put in my woorkup motif on your own GeneratePress website with just a single click! It is known as the Marketer motif. Get started with a fantastic blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum website, since I don’t use it for much. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole appearance 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal website, as we just use it for our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty fast. WordPress Themes
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under an hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all my sites for this (which includes several EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child topics, my life will be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best news is, I now have a thousand more choices to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that want to have the ability to customize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a great base to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, people who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any type of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Need something that will instantly look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you want to produce a fashion blog, you may be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a great deal easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely will need to go in and personalize things. And while the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific features that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient because you’ll have the ability to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you adequate options, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize nearly everything about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Layout area, you can configure comprehensive settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like how many widgets to include
Likewise, That the Typography place lets you control the font to get every single element on your site, including buttons:
And You also get a thorough area to control the colour of each and every element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization choices from the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This level of detail may be a little overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But once you understand how the preferences come together, you will have full control on how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All its features, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That together, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you an idea, I conducted a little test.
First, I set up an empty website using a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on exactly the same test website without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You do that same test with different topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. WordPress Themes
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which allows you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page building. It lets you create separate”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own design and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you could select and choose what features you want to trigger.
That Way, you don’t need to slow down your site for a quality which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a fresh Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most topics, each post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta name box for every single post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to create the proper baseline for your own page builder layout, making it easy to create custom articles as needed. WordPress Themes
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about using GeneratePress, I feel you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you almost as many settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, which provides you use on infinite websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the initial year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you won’t get any more updates).
When You believe the normal premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic value.
As I mentioned, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your requirements for your market out of day one.
But If you’re ready to spend time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to locate a starter website that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will locate. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no difficulty making your site load in under one minute. WordPress Themes
