Background WordPress Theme Top Menu
Within the previous 10 years, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I had been using MyThemeShop, that was pretty excellent. However, I had to do a great deal of customization to make it do and work how I wanted it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the finest WordPress theme I have discovered in a decade . I was blown away and am now moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into precisely why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as several other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. WordPress Theme Top Menu
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I tend to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there isn’t that great, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this case, this was a mistake. The motif now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So clearly Tom is doing something right here.
I Really set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the features. I’m going to be covering the superior edition of the theme, because it’s worth . Actually, Tom, if you ever read this and so are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not want running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Impressive integration using the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font wonderful built in.
A lot of hooks and filters which make it great for developers.
Excellent active service from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their site, the subject has existed long enough that what I Googled throughout the setup process was found inside a few seconds in their forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right from the box without any customizations to see how quickly the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but this is not the situation. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure that every record loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the amount of files isn’t as important. However, the size is! Have a peek at a few of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen the same throughout each the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving around the cornerwe can anticipate that to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your site. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be made this way.
If You are curious, I am using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more need to use a young child motif . This makes my life much easier. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally update my GeneratePress theme this exact moment rather than shed one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. WordPress Theme Top Menu
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a great deal of alternatives. You can change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a full width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these choices are permitted by the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here daily. However, allow me to show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also made by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to add responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Add custom classes
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You might want to Also catch his incredible WP Display Posts plugin also. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also have it show last modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all sorts of things in terms of design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I am in fact using GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For all those Of those who are regular readers, you likely did not even notice that I changed the entire theme that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty fast, but I invested a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I don’t have a child motif. Each of the customizations were created using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could make a replica of woorkup to your new GeneratePress blog library. I am happy to let you know that now you can install my woorkup motif in your GeneratePress website with just a click! It is called the Marketer motif. Get started with a great blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal site, since I don’t use it to get much. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a couple plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal website, as we just use it for our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty fast. WordPress Theme Top Menu
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under an hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my sites to it (which comprises several EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 websites all running in GP with no child topics, my life is going to be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I finally have a billion more options to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that want to be able to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a great base to make it load fast.
Since Of that, those who assemble WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Need something that will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to create a fashion blog, you may be happier choosing a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a great deal simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely need to go in and personalize matters. And though the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient because you’ll have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you adequate options, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize pretty much all about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Layout area, you can configure comprehensive settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to add
Likewise, That the Typography place enables you to control the font to get each and every element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also receive a thorough area to control the colour of each and every element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you much more customization options from the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This level of detail might be a little overwhelming if you are a beginner. But once you understand how the preferences come together, you will have full control over how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All its attributes, GeneratePress always has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, which is about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded topics can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you an idea, I ran a little test.
First, I set up an empty website utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the same test site without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You perform the exact same test with different topics, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. WordPress Theme Top Menu
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature which allows you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create separate”sections” on a webpage, each with their own design and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you could select and choose exactly which features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not need to slow your site down for a quality which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a fresh Site Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most themes, each page and post will use the very same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Layout meta box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured image, article title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are in a position to produce the correct baseline for your page builder design, which makes it effortless to create custom articles as needed. WordPress Theme Top Menu
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I believe you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as numerous configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly affordable. It costs only $39.95, and that gives you use on unlimited sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and updates following the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress following the first year without beating — you just won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You believe that the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic value.
As I mentioned, I do not think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your requirements for your market from day one.
But If you are willing to spend some time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress site. Or, you may even be able to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s among the fastest-loading WordPress topics you will find. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any problem making your website load in under one second. WordPress Theme Top Menu
