Intro WordPress Premium
Within the previous 10 decades, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, which was pretty excellent. But I had to do a lot of customization to allow it to perform and work the way I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I have discovered in a decade . I had been blown away and am moving all my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as many other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. WordPress Premium
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for many years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there isn’t that great, or not supported for long. However, in this case, that was a mistake. The theme currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the features. I will be covering the superior edition of the theme, since it’s worth . Actually, Tom, if you read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t need running. This is one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Impressive integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built-in.
A lot of hooks and filters which make it great for programmers.
Excellent active support from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have great documentation on their site, the subject has been around long enough that everything I wholeheartedly during the setup procedure was found inside a couple of seconds from their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I always test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a lot of big files, but this isn’t the situation. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure every file loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents is not as important. However, the size is! Take a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen exactly the same during all of the premium add-ons. They are as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file included. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving around the cornerwe could anticipate this to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate anything you are not using to guarantee they don’t load on your website. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built-in, I felt right at home with this. Everything ought to be made this way.
If You’re interested, I am using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no more need to use a young child theme. This makes my life much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this very moment rather than lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make this possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. WordPress Premium
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a lot of options. You can change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default to a full width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these options are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. However, allow me to show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by precisely the same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Add custom courses
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You might want to Also catch his amazing WP Display Posts plugin also. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also get it show last modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you perform all kinds of things in terms of design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I am in fact utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For those Of those that are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice that I changed the entire motif that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was already pretty quickly, but I spent a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a child motif. All the customizations were created using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can create a replica of woorkup for the new GeneratePress site library. I’m pleased to let you know that you can now put in my woorkup motif on your GeneratePress site with only a single click! It’s known as the Marketer theme. Get started using a fantastic blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum site, since I do not use it for much. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the whole appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal website, as we just use it to our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. WordPress Premium
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under an hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my websites for this (which includes some EDD e-commerce sites). After I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my life will be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news is, I finally have a billion more options to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to personalize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a great base to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, people who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something which will instantly look perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to create a style blog, you may be happier picking out a market theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a lot easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely will need to go in and customize things. And though the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Performance, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient as you will have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you adequate possibilities, but should you have GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize nearly all about your site.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you can configure detailed settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to add
Likewise, The Typography area lets you control the font for every single element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also receive a thorough area to control the colour of each and every element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you a lot more customization options from the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This amount of detail may be a little overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But as soon as you understand the way the preferences come together, you’ll have full control on how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All its attributes, GeneratePress always has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, which is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I set up a vacant site using a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the exact same test site without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You perform the exact same test with different topics, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. WordPress Premium
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which lets you create custom hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create different”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own layout and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you can select and choose exactly which characteristics you want to activate.
That Way, you do not have to slow down your site for a quality that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a fresh Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most themes, each page and post will use the same settings for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — but you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta name box for each and every post and page:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are in a position to produce the proper baseline for your own page builder design, which makes it easy to create custom content as needed. WordPress Premium
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly affordable. It costs only $39.95, which gives you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades after the initial year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You consider that the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic price.
As I mentioned, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your needs for your market from day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend some time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress site. Or, you might even have the ability to find a starter website that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics you will locate. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any problem making your site load in under one second. WordPress Premium
