Introduction WordPress Page Theme
Within the past ten years, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I was using MyThemeShop, that was pretty excellent. But I still had to perform a lot of customization to allow it to do and operate the way I needed it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I’ve found in 10 years. I was blown away and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review under. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. WordPress Page Theme
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this case, this was a mistake. The motif currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the features. I will be covering the superior version of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not want running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Impressive integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built-in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it good for programmers.
Great active support from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their site, the subject has existed long enough that what I wholeheartedly during the setup process was found inside a few seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right out of the box with no customizations to see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a lot of big files, but this isn’t the situation. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring every record packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of files isn’t as important. However, the size is! Have a peek at some of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen the same during each of the premium add-ons. They’re as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving round the corner, we can expect that to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to ensure they do not load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built-in, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are curious, I am using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is I no more have to use a Child motif . This makes my life much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally update my GeneratePress theme this very moment and not shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make it possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. WordPress Page Theme
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a great deal of alternatives. You are able to change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a complete width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these options are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here daily. But let me show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Add custom classes
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You might want to Also catch his incredible WP Display Posts plugin also. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also have it show past modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to do all kinds of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For those Of you who are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice that I changed the whole theme that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty fast, but I spent a lot of time customizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I don’t have a kid theme. All the customizations were made with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could make a replica of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress blog library. I am happy to let you know that now you can install my woorkup motif on your own GeneratePress site with only a single click! It is known as the Marketer motif. Get started using a fantastic blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum website, as I don’t use it for much. Since you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the whole appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a couple plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal site, as we simply use it to our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly. WordPress Page Theme
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under one hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my sites to it (which includes several EDD e-commerce websites ). After I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP without any child topics, my life is going to be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing isI now have a thousand more options to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to personalize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a great base to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, people who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will normally pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something which will instantly look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier picking out a niche theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a great deal easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones if you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will almost certainly need to go in and personalize things. And though the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific features that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Performance, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient because you’ll be able to see all the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you decent possibilities, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize pretty much all about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Layout area, you may configure comprehensive settings to your:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography place enables you to control the font to get each and every element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also receive a detailed area to control the color of each and every element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you much more customization choices from the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This level of detail might be a little overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But as soon as you understand the way the settings come together, you will have complete control on how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All its features, GeneratePress always includes a focus on exceptional performance and tidy code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, which is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I set up an empty website utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the same test website without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You do the exact same test with different themes, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. WordPress Page Theme
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which allows you create custom hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you can select and choose what features you would like to activate.
That Way, you do not have to slow down your site for a quality which you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you needed to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a fresh Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any among those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most topics, each page and post will use the same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a brand new Layout meta box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, article title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most useful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to create the proper baseline for your page builder layout, which makes it easy to create custom articles as needed. WordPress Page Theme
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as numerous settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite affordable. It costs just $39.95, which gives you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and updates after the first year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress after the first year without beating — you just won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You believe that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great price.
As I said, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your needs for your niche out of day one.
But If you’re ready to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any type of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will locate. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one minute. WordPress Page Theme
