Introduction WordPress Mega Menu Generatepress
Over the past ten decades, I have used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I was using MyThemeShop, that was pretty good. But I still had to do a great deal of customization to make it perform and work how I wanted it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I was blown away and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I will go into exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review under. And if you are wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. WordPress Mega Menu Generatepress
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there is not that great, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the superior version of the theme, because it’s worth . In fact, Tom, in the event that you read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t want running. This is one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Impressive integration with the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of the customizer previously, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built in.
Tons of hooks and filters that make it good for programmers.
Great active support from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their site, the theme has existed long enough that what I Googled during the setup process was found within a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right from the box with no customizations to just see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a lot of big files, but this isn’t the situation. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring that every file packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of documents is not as important. However, the size is! Have a peek at some of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen exactly the same during each of the premium add-ons. They’re as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file contained. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we can anticipate this to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your website. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are curious, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is I no more have to use a Child theme. This makes my life much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this exact minute and not shed one customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make this possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. WordPress Mega Menu Generatepress
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You are able to change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, a lot of these options are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here daily. However, let me show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by the same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Insert Customized courses
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also grab his incredible WP Display Posts plugin too. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also get it show last modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all kinds of things concerning design. Think of it like a page builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you probably did not even notice I changed the entire theme that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif which I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was pretty fast, but I invested a lot of time customizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a kid motif. All the customizations were created using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can make a replica of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress blog library. I am pleased to allow you to know that you can now install my woorkup theme in your GeneratePress site with just a click! It is known as the Marketer theme. Get started with a fantastic blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum site, since I do not use it to get much. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal site, as we just use it to our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty fast. WordPress Mega Menu Generatepress
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my sites for this (which includes several EDD e-commerce sites). After I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP with no child topics, my life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news is, I finally have a thousand more options to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users that want to be able to personalize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load fast.
Because Of that, people who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Need something that will immediately appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you want to create a fashion blog, you may be happier picking out a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a great deal simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll most likely will need to go in and customize matters. And though the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Plenty Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient as you’ll have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you adequate options, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize nearly everything about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design region, you can configure detailed settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to add
Likewise, That the Typography area enables you to control the font for each and every element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also get a detailed area to control the colour of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization choices from the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But once you understand how the settings come together, you’ll have complete control on how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All its features, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, which is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you an idea, I conducted a little test.
First, I set up a vacant website using a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad at all! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test site without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% fewer
If You perform that same test with different topics, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. WordPress Mega Menu Generatepress
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page building. It lets you create different”sections” on a webpage, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you could select and choose what features you want to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow your site down for a quality that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you had to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any among the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most topics, each page and post will use the same settings for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — however you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Layout meta box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, post featured image, article title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re in a position to create the proper baseline for your own page builder layout, making it easy to create custom articles as needed. WordPress Mega Menu Generatepress
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are serious about using GeneratePress, I feel you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite affordable. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on infinite sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the first year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress after the initial year without renewing — you just won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You consider the normal premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I said, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your needs for your market out of day one.
However, If you’re willing to spend some time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics you will find. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no difficulty making your site load in under one minute. WordPress Mega Menu Generatepress
