Intro WordPress Generatepress Logo
Within the past ten decades, I have used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, that was pretty good. But I had to do a lot of customization to make it do and work how I needed it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the finest WordPress theme I’ve found in 10 years. I was dismissed and am moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into precisely why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and thicker multicolored themes. WordPress Generatepress Logo
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that great, or not supported for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The motif now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should get the job done. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at a number of the features. I will be covering the superior edition of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you read this and so are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t need running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built-in.
A lot of filters and hooks that make it good for developers.
Excellent active service from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be incredible. Besides have great documentation on their site, the subject has existed long enough that everything I wholeheartedly during the setup process was found inside a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a lot of big files, but this isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure that every record loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of files isn’t as important. But the dimensions is! Have a look at a few of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen the same during all of the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file contained. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving around the corner, we could expect that to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to guarantee they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built-in, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be made this way.
If You’re curious, I am using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is I no longer need to use a young child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this very moment and not shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. WordPress Generatepress Logo
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a lot of options. You can alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a complete width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here all day. However, let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Insert custom classes
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also catch his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also get it show last modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all kinds of things concerning design. Think of it like a page builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I am in fact utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For all those Of you who are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the whole theme that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif which I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I spent a great deal of time customizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid motif. Each of the customizations were made using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could create a replica of woorkup to your new GeneratePress blog library. I’m happy to allow you to know that you can now put in my woorkup theme on your own GeneratePress site with just a click! It is called the Marketer theme. Get started using a great blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum site, since I don’t use it to get much. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the entire appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal site, as we simply use it to our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast. WordPress Generatepress Logo
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under one hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my sites to it (which includes some EDD e-commerce websites ). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my life will be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing isI finally have a billion more options to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect alternative for performance-focused users who wish to be able to customize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, people who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Combination If…
…you Want something which will instantly look perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to produce a style blog, you may be happier choosing a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a great deal easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely need to go in and customize things. And while the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific features that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Performance, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you will be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you decent possibilities, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize nearly all about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Layout region, you may configure comprehensive settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to add
Likewise, The Typography area lets you control the font for every single element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also get a detailed region to control the colour of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization choices from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This level of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But once you realize how the settings come together, you’ll have full control on how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All its attributes, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on excellent performance and tidy code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, and it is about as small as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded topics can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a small test.
First, I set up a vacant site utilizing a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the same test site without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You perform that same test with different topics, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. WordPress Generatepress Logo
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create custom hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create separate”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you could pick and choose what characteristics you want to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow your site down for a feature which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Site Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most themes, each page and post will use the very same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — however you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a brand new Design meta name box for every single post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, like your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you’re able to produce the proper baseline for your page builder layout, which makes it effortless to create custom content as needed. WordPress Generatepress Logo
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you’re seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I feel you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you almost as numerous settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, and that provides you use on infinite websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades after the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress following the first year without renewing — you won’t get any more updates).
When You consider that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great value.
As I mentioned, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You desire a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your market from day one.
However, If you are ready to spend time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you may even be able to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will locate. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one second. WordPress Generatepress Logo
