Background WordPress Completely Free Themes
Over the previous ten decades, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I was using MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. However, I still had to do a great deal of customization to allow it to perform and operate how I wanted it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I’ve found in 10 years. I had been dismissed and am moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review under. And if you’re wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and thicker multicolored themes. WordPress Completely Free Themes
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there is not that good, or not supported for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The motif now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the superior version of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you ever read this and so are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not want running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these really are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built-in.
Tons of hooks and filters which make it good for programmers.
Excellent active service from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has existed long enough that what I wholeheartedly during the setup process was found within a few seconds from their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right from the box without any customizations to see how quickly the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a lot of big files, but that isn’t the situation. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring that every record loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of files isn’t as important. However, the dimensions is! Have a look at some of the core GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about performance! And I have Seen exactly the same throughout all the premium add-ons. They are as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the largest file contained. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming round the corner, we can anticipate that to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they do not load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built, I felt at home with this. Everything should be made this way.
If You’re interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no longer need to use a young child theme. This makes my life so much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this exact minute rather than lose one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. WordPress Completely Free Themes
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a great deal of options. You can change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default to a complete width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, lots of these choices are permitted from the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. However, let me show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Insert Customized courses
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example under:
You might want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin also. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also have it show last modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you do all kinds of things in terms of design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of you who are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the whole motif that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I spent a great deal of time customizing it. In reality, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid theme. Each of the customizations were made with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can make a copy of woorkup to your new GeneratePress site library. I am happy to let you know that now you can install my woorkup theme on your GeneratePress site with only a single click! It’s called the Marketer motif. Get started with a great blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum website, as I do not use it to get much. Since you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the entire look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal website, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. WordPress Completely Free Themes
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under an hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my websites to it (which includes some EDD e-commerce sites). Once I have my 9 websites all running in GP with no child topics, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I now have a billion more choices to choose from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a great foundation to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, people who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Want something that will instantly appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a lot easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will almost certainly need to go in and personalize matters. And while the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific features that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient because you’ll be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you adequate possibilities, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize pretty much all about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Design region, you may configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like how many widgets to add
Similarly, The Typography area enables you to control the font to get every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also get a detailed area to control the colour of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization choices from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But as soon as you realize how the preferences come together, you will have complete control on how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its attributes, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, and it is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded themes can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I set up a vacant site using a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the exact same test website without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You do the exact same test with other topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. WordPress Completely Free Themes
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature that allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create different”sections” on a page, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you could pick and choose exactly which features you would like to activate.
That Way, you do not have to slow your site down for a feature which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most themes, each page and post will use the very same settings for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta name box for each and every page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured image, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are able to create the proper baseline for your own page builder layout, making it effortless to create custom articles as needed. WordPress Completely Free Themes
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you nearly as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, which provides you use on unlimited sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and upgrades after the first year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress after the initial year without beating — you just won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You consider the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great price.
As I mentioned, I do not think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your requirements for your niche out of day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you might even be able to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will locate. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no problem making your site load in under one second. WordPress Completely Free Themes
