Background Website Themes
Over the past ten years, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I had been using MyThemeShop, which was pretty good. But I had to perform a lot of customization to make it perform and operate how I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I’ve discovered in a decade . I had been dismissed and am now moving all of my websites to GeneratePress. I will go into precisely why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I’ve attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. Website Themes
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I have really seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of stuff on there is not that great, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this circumstance, this was a mistake. The theme now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at a number of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the superior version of the subject, because it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t want running. This is one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of the customizer previously, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built in.
A lot of hooks and filters which make it good for programmers.
Excellent active support from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has existed long enough that everything I wholeheartedly throughout the setup process was found inside a couple of seconds from their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a new theme right out of the box without any customizations to just see how fast the base is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a whole lot of big files, but this is not the situation. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure that every file packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents isn’t as significant. But the dimensions is! Take a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen the same throughout each of the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving around the cornerwe could expect that to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your site. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be made this way.
If You’re curious, I am using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no longer have to use a Child motif . This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this very moment and not lose a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make it possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Website Themes
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You can alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these options are permitted by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here daily. However, let me show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Insert custom classes
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You May Want to Also catch his incredible WP Show Posts plugin also. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also get it show past modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you perform all kinds of things concerning design. Consider it like a page builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For those Of you who are regular readers, you likely did not even notice I changed the whole theme that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I spent a great deal of time customizing it. In reality, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid theme. Each of the customizations were made using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can create a replica of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress blog library. I am pleased to allow you to know that now you can install my woorkup theme in your own GeneratePress site with just a single click! It is called the Marketer theme. Get started with a fantastic blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal site, as I don’t use it for much. As you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the entire look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a few plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal website, as we just use it to our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Website Themes
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my websites to it (which includes several EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child topics, my life will be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I finally have a billion more options to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users who wish to be able to personalize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, people who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Need something which will instantly look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to create a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a great deal easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll almost certainly need to go in and personalize matters. And though the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific features that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient as you will have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize nearly all about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Layout area, you can configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to add
Similarly, That the Typography area lets you control the font to get every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also get a thorough region to control the color of each and every element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options from the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This level of detail might be a little overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But once you realize the way the settings come together, you’ll have full control over how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All of its features, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, which is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few poorly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the leave obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a small test.
First, I set up an empty website utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad at all! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test site without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You do that same test with different topics, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Website Themes
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature that allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page building. It lets you create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you can select and choose what characteristics you would like to trigger.
That Way, you don’t need to slow down your site for a feature that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you needed to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most themes, every post and page will use the very same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Layout meta name box for each and every post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to produce the proper baseline for your page builder layout, which makes it easy to create custom content as needed. Website Themes
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I feel you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as numerous settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly affordable. It costs only $39.95, which gives you use on unlimited websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates after the initial year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without beating — you won’t receive any more updates).
When You consider that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I mentioned, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your needs for your niche out of day one.
But If you are ready to spend time changing settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you may even have the ability to locate a starter site that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is among the fastest-loading WordPress topics you will locate. Therefore, if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great choice.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no problem making your site load in under one second. Website Themes
