Introduction Top Wp Themes
Within the past ten decades, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I was using MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. However, I had to perform a lot of customization to make it perform and operate the way I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the finest WordPress theme I have found in a decade . I was blown away and am moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I will enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and thicker multicolored themes. Top Wp Themes
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, so I tend to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there isn’t that good, or not supported for long. However, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The theme currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the features. I will be covering the premium version of the subject, because it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not want running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Impressive integration using the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of this customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these really are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built-in.
A lot of filters and hooks which make it great for developers.
Excellent active support from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that everything I wholeheartedly throughout the setup procedure was found within a couple of seconds from their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I always test a new theme right out of the box with no customizations to see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to generate a whole lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure that every file loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the amount of files isn’t as important. But the size is! Take a peek at some of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about performance! And I have Seen exactly the same during all the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file included. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming around the cornerwe could anticipate that to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your website. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built, I felt at home with this. Everything should be made this way.
If You are curious, I am using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is I no longer have to use a young child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this exact moment rather than shed one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Top Wp Themes
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a lot of options. You can change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default to a full width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, a lot of these options are enabled by the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. However, allow me to show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Add custom courses
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example under:
You might want to Also catch his incredible WP Display Posts plugin too. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also have it show last modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to do all kinds of things in terms of design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in reality utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For those Of those that are regular readers, you likely did not even notice I changed the whole motif that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was already pretty fast, but I invested a lot of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid theme. All the customizations were created using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can make a replica of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress blog library. I am pleased to let you know that you can now install my woorkup theme in your own GeneratePress website with just a single click! It’s called the Marketer theme. Get started with a fantastic blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved within my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum site, since I do not use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal website, as we simply use it to our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Top Wp Themes
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my sites for this (which includes several EDD e-commerce sites). Once I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP with no child topics, my life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news is, I now have a thousand more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that want to have the ability to personalize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a great foundation to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Need something which will immediately appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier picking out a market theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a lot simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones if you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely need to go in and personalize things. And though the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient because you will have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but should you have GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize nearly all about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you can configure comprehensive settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography area enables you to control the font for every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also receive a thorough region to control the color of every single element on your website.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization choices from the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But once you understand the way the preferences come together, you will have complete control on how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All of its attributes, GeneratePress always includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, and it is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you an idea, I ran a little test.
First, I put up an empty website using a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the same test site without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with other topics, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Top Wp Themes
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page building. It lets you create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you can pick and choose exactly which features you would like to activate.
That Way, you don’t have to slow down your site for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you had to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a fresh Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most themes, every post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a brand new Layout meta name box for each and every page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re able to produce the correct baseline for your page builder layout, making it effortless to create custom content as needed. Top Wp Themes
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme is available for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about using GeneratePress, I feel you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite affordable. It costs only $39.95, which provides you use on unlimited sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates after the first year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress following the first year without beating — you won’t get any more updates).
When You believe the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic price.
As I mentioned, I do not think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your requirements for your market out of day one.
But If you are ready to spend time changing settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress site. Or, you may even have the ability to find a starter website that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will locate. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any problem making your website load in under one minute. Top Wp Themes
