Intro Top Wp Themes 2016
Over the past ten decades, I have used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. However, I still had to perform a great deal of customization to make it perform and work how I needed it to. A few weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the best WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I was dismissed and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I will enter precisely why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review under. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Top Wp Themes 2016
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I tend to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that great, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this case, this was a mistake. The motif now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the qualities. I will be covering the superior version of the subject, because it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, in the event that you ever read this and so are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t need running. This is one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Impressive integration with the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of this customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these really are a great combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built in.
Tons of hooks and filters which make it great for developers.
Great active support from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their site, the theme has been around long enough that what I Googled during the setup process was found within a few seconds from their forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box with no customizations to see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything for this. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but this isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents isn’t as significant. However, the size is! Have a peek at a few of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same during each the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is probably the largest file contained. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving round the corner, we could expect this to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you are not using to ensure they do not load on your website. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built-in, I felt at home with this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You’re interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no longer have to use a young child motif . This makes my life so much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this exact minute and not shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress website. Top Wp Themes 2016
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a lot of options. You are able to alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default to a full width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these options are permitted from the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But allow me to show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also made by the same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Insert custom courses
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You May Want to Also catch his amazing WP Show Posts plugin also. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also get it show past modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all sorts of things concerning design. Think of it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For those Of you that are regular readers, you likely did not even notice that I changed the whole motif that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent annually customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I invested a great deal of time customizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid theme. All the customizations were created with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can make a copy of woorkup to your new GeneratePress site library. I am pleased to allow you to know that you can now put in my woorkup theme in your GeneratePress website with only a single click! It’s known as the Marketer theme. Get started with a fantastic blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal site, as I don’t use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the entire appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a couple plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal site, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty fast. Top Wp Themes 2016
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under an hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my websites to it (which comprises several EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP without any child topics, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best news isI finally have a thousand more choices to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users who wish to be able to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a great foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, people who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something which will instantly appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you want to create a style blog, you might be happier choosing a niche theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a great deal easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones if you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll most likely need to go in and customize things. And while the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular features that explain why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you will be able to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you decent options, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize pretty much everything about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you may configure detailed settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to include
Likewise, The Typography area lets you control the font to get every single element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also receive a thorough area to control the colour of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you a lot more customization options in the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This amount of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But once you understand the way the settings come together, you’ll have complete control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its features, GeneratePress always has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, which is about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I set up a vacant site using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test site without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You perform the exact same test with other topics, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Top Wp Themes 2016
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page building. It lets you create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you could pick and choose what features you would like to activate.
That Way, you don’t have to slow down your site for a feature which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you had to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a fresh Site Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most themes, every post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You might have some custom templates or formats — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Layout meta box for every single post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, article title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re in a position to create the proper baseline for your own page builder design, making it effortless to create custom articles as needed. Top Wp Themes 2016
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme can be obtained at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, and that gives you use on infinite sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the first year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress following the first year without renewing — you just won’t get any more updates).
When You believe that the normal premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic price.
As I said, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your needs for your market from day one.
However, If you are ready to spend time altering settings, GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you may even have the ability to locate a starter site that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will find. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no difficulty making your website load in under one minute. Top Wp Themes 2016
