Introduction Themes 2016
Within the past ten years, I have used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, which was fairly excellent. However, I still had to do a lot of customization to make it perform and work how I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I have discovered in a decade . I had been dismissed and am now moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter precisely why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review under. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Themes 2016
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there is not that great, or not supported for long. However, in this circumstance, this was a mistake. The theme now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the qualities. I will be covering the premium version of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and so are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not want running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Impressive integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built-in.
Tons of hooks and filters that make it great for developers.
Excellent active service from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has existed long enough that what I wholeheartedly during the setup process was found inside a couple of seconds from their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I always test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how fast the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure that every record loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of files is not as important. However, the dimensions is! Take a peek at some of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen the same during all of the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file contained. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving around the corner, we could expect that to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you aren’t using to ensure they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built-in, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You’re interested, I am using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more need to use a young child theme. This makes my life much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally update my GeneratePress motif this very minute and not lose one customization. The hooks add-on definitely can help make this possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Themes 2016
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a great deal of options. You are able to change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default option to a complete width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these options are enabled from the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. However, allow me to show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by precisely the same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Insert Customized courses
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You May Want to Also catch his amazing WP Show Posts plugin also. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also have it show past modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all kinds of things concerning design. Consider it like a page builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the entire theme that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif which I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a child theme. All the customizations were created using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could make a copy of woorkup for the new GeneratePress site library. I am pleased to allow you to know that you can now put in my woorkup motif on your own GeneratePress website with only a click! It’s called the Marketer motif. Get started using a fantastic blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal website, since I do not use it to get much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the entire look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal site, as we simply use it to our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Themes 2016
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my sites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce websites ). Once I have my 9 websites all running in GP with no child topics, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I finally have a billion more choices to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to personalize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, people who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Need something which will immediately look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you want to create a fashion blog, you might be happier picking out a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a great deal easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely need to go in and customize matters. And while the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is so popular.
Plenty Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient because you’ll have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you adequate options, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize nearly all about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design region, you can configure comprehensive settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography area lets you control the font to get each and every element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also receive a detailed area to control the colour of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you much more customization options in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This level of detail may be a little overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But as soon as you understand how the preferences come together, you’ll have full control on how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All of its features, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on excellent performance and tidy code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, and it is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you a sense, I conducted a little test.
First, I put up an empty website using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the same test site without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You perform the exact same test with other topics, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Themes 2016
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create different”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you could pick and choose exactly which characteristics you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow down your site for a quality which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you had to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a new Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most themes, each post and page will use the same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — but you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Design meta name box for each and every page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most useful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are in a position to produce the proper baseline for your page builder design, making it easy to create custom content as needed. Themes 2016
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I believe you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you almost as numerous settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite affordable. It costs just $39.95, and that gives you use on infinite sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates after the first year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress after the first year without beating — you just won’t receive any more updates).
When You believe the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I said, I do not think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your needs for your market from day one.
However, If you’re willing to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you might even be able to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of the fastest-loading WordPress themes you will locate. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good choice.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your site load in under one second. Themes 2016
