Introduction Theme Wp
Within the past ten decades, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, which was pretty excellent. However, I still had to do a great deal of customization to make it perform and work the way I needed it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I have discovered in a decade . I was dismissed and am moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi as well as several other lightweight and thicker multicolored themes. Theme Wp
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there is not that great, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The theme now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the features. I will be covering the superior edition of the theme, since it’s worth . Actually, Tom, in the event that you read this and so are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t want running. This is one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built in.
Tons of hooks and filters which make it great for programmers.
Excellent active service from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that what I wholeheartedly during the setup process was found within a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time for the fun part! I test a new theme right out of the box with no customizations to just see how quickly the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to generate a lot of big files, but that isn’t the situation. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring every file packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of files is not as significant. But the size is! Take a look at some of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout each of the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we can anticipate that to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they do not load on your website. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be made this way.
If You’re interested, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no more need to use a young child motif . This makes my life so much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this exact moment rather than lose a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make it possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Theme Wp
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of options. You are able to change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. But allow me to show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by precisely the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to add responsive columns into any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Add Customized classes
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You May Want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also have it show past modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all sorts of things concerning design. Think of it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I’m in fact utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For those Of you who are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the whole theme that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent annually customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I spent a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a kid motif. All the customizations were created with the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could make a replica of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress site library. I am pleased to let you know that you can now install my woorkup motif on your GeneratePress site with just a single click! It’s called the Marketer theme. Get started using a great blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum website, since I do not use it for much. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the entire appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum website, as we simply use it to our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Theme Wp
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all my sites to it (which comprises several EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life will be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing isI now have a thousand more choices to choose from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that wish to be able to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a great base to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, those who assemble WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Need something which will immediately appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to produce a style blog, you may be happier picking out a niche theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a great deal simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely will need to go in and personalize matters. And while the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific features that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient because you will be able to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you decent possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize nearly everything about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Layout region, you can configure comprehensive settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to add
Likewise, That the Typography place enables you to control the font to get each and every element on your site, including buttons:
And You also get a thorough area to control the colour of each and every element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you much more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This amount of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But once you understand the way the settings come together, you’ll have full control on how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All of its attributes, GeneratePress always has a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, and it will be about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a small test.
First, I set up a vacant website using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on exactly the same test website without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You do the exact same test with different topics, you are going to continue to see that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Theme Wp
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you can pick and choose what features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you don’t need to slow down your site for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you needed to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a new Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most themes, each page and post will use the very same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Layout meta box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls are the most useful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to produce the proper baseline for your own page builder design, making it easy to create custom articles as needed. Theme Wp
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I believe you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and upgrades after the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress after the initial year without renewing — you won’t get any more updates).
When You consider that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic price.
As I mentioned, I do not think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your requirements for your market from day one.
But If you are willing to spend time changing settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you might even have the ability to locate a starter site that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will find. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any problem making your website load in under one minute. Theme Wp
