Introduction Theme Words
Over the previous ten years, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I had been using MyThemeShop, which was fairly excellent. However, I had to do a great deal of customization to allow it to do and work how I wanted it to. A few weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I’ve discovered in 10 years. I had been blown away and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Theme Words
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there isn’t that great, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this case, this was a mistake. The theme currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the qualities. I will be covering the premium edition of the subject, since it’s worth . In fact, Tom, if you read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not want running. This is one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font wonderful built-in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it great for programmers.
Excellent active support from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have great documentation on their website, the subject has been around long enough that what I wholeheartedly throughout the setup procedure was found inside a few seconds from their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box without any customizations to just see how fast the base is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but that is not the case. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring that every file packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents is not as important. However, the dimensions is! Take a peek at some of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen exactly the same throughout all of the premium add-ons. They are as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the cornerwe could anticipate that to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you aren’t using to guarantee they don’t load on your website. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built-in, I felt at home with this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are curious, I am using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more need to use a young child motif . This makes my life so much easier. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this exact moment and not shed a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make it possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress website. Theme Words
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post you have a lot of options. You are able to change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled from the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. But let me show you couple which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by precisely the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to add responsive columns to any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Insert custom classes
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You might want to Also catch his incredible WP Show Posts plugin too. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also get it show past modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you perform all sorts of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For those Of those who are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice that I changed the whole theme that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time customizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a child motif. All the customizations were made with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could make a replica of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to allow you to know that you can now put in my woorkup motif on your own GeneratePress website with only a click! It is known as the Marketer motif. Get started using a fantastic blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal site, since I don’t use it for much. As you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a couple plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal website, as we just use it for our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Theme Words
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to move everything over and get it looking just how I needed it in under one hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my sites to it (which includes some EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 websites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life will be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news isI now have a billion more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that want to be able to customize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, people who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something that will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you want to produce a style blog, you might be happier picking out a market theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a great deal easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will almost certainly will need to go in and customize things. And while the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient because you will have the ability to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you decent options, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize pretty much all about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Layout region, you can configure comprehensive settings to your:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to add
Likewise, That the Typography area lets you control the font for every single element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also receive a detailed region to control the color of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you much more customization choices from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This level of detail may be a little overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But once you realize the way the preferences come together, you will have full control on how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All its features, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, which is about as small as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the leave obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a small test.
First, I put up an empty website utilizing a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad at all! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the same test website without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You perform that same test with different themes, you are going to continue to see that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Theme Words
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a webpage, each with their own design and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you could pick and choose what characteristics you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow down your site for a feature which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The last, you had to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any among those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most themes, every post and page will use the very same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Design meta box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured image, article title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re able to produce the correct baseline for your own page builder layout, which makes it easy to create custom content as needed. Theme Words
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about using GeneratePress, I feel you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, and that gives you use on infinite websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and upgrades following the initial year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress after the first year without beating — you just won’t receive any more updates).
When You believe the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I said, I do not think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your requirements for your market out of day one.
But If you’re ready to spend time altering settings, GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you might even be able to find a starter website that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s among those fastest-loading WordPress themes you will find. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one second. Theme Words
