Introduction Templates WordPress Premium
Over the previous ten years, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I was using MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. But I still had to perform a great deal of customization to make it do and operate how I needed it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I have found in a decade . I was dismissed and am moving all of my websites to GeneratePress. I will enter precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review under. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Templates WordPress Premium
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for many years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of stuff on there isn’t that great, or not encouraged for long. However, in this case, that was a mistake. The theme now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the features. I’m going to be covering the premium version of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, in the event that you ever read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not want running. This is one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Impressive integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it good for developers.
Excellent active service from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be incredible. Besides have great documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that what I wholeheartedly during the setup process was found within a few seconds from their forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to see how fast the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure every record loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of files is not as important. However, the dimensions is! Take a peek at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen the same throughout all the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file contained. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe can anticipate that to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your site. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built-in, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be made this way.
If You’re curious, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more have to use a young child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this exact moment and not lose one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Templates WordPress Premium
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a great deal of alternatives. You can alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default option to a complete width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled from the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here daily. However, allow me to show you couple which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by precisely the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to add responsive columns into any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Insert custom classes
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You might want to Also catch his amazing WP Display Posts plugin too. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also have it show past modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you perform all sorts of things concerning design. Think of it like a page builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I’m in fact utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For all those Of those that are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice that I changed the entire theme that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time customizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid motif. Each of the customizations were made with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can create a replica of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress blog library. I’m happy to allow you to know that now you can put in my woorkup theme on your GeneratePress site with just a click! It’s called the Marketer theme. Get started with a great blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal website, as I do not use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal website, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty fast. Templates WordPress Premium
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I needed it in under an hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all my websites to it (which includes several EDD e-commerce sites). After I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP with no child topics, my entire life will be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news is, I finally have a billion more options to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect alternative for performance-focused users who wish to have the ability to customize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a great foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, people who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Need something that will instantly look perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to produce a style blog, you might be happier picking out a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a lot simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely need to go in and personalize matters. And though the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient as you will have the ability to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you decent options, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize pretty much everything about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Layout region, you can configure comprehensive settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to add
Similarly, That the Typography place enables you to control the font for each and every element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also get a detailed area to control the color of every single element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This amount of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But as soon as you understand how the settings come together, you’ll have complete control over how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its features, GeneratePress always includes a focus on exceptional performance and tidy code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, which is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That together, and you obtain a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a small test.
First, I set up a vacant website using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the same test website without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% fewer
If You perform the exact same test with different topics, you are going to continue to see that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Templates WordPress Premium
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a webpage, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you can pick and choose exactly which features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow down your site for a feature which you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you needed to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a fresh Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most topics, every page and post will use the very same settings for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Design meta box for each and every page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured image, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your own page builder
Where These controls are the most useful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to produce the correct baseline for your page builder design, which makes it easy to create custom content as needed. Templates WordPress Premium
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme can be obtained at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and updates after the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress following the first year without renewing — you just won’t receive any more updates).
When You believe the normal premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I mentioned, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your requirements for your niche out of day one.
But If you are willing to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you may even be able to locate a starter website that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will find. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any problem making your website load in under one second. Templates WordPress Premium
