Intro Tema WordPress
Within the previous ten decades, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I was using MyThemeShop, that was pretty excellent. However, I still had to do a great deal of customization to allow it to perform and operate how I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the best WordPress theme I’ve found in a decade . I had been dismissed and am moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I will enter precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review under. And if you’re wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi as well as several other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. Tema WordPress

GeneratePress Evaluation
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there isn’t that great, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this circumstance, this was a mistake. The theme currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at a number of the features. I’m going to be covering the premium version of the theme, since it’s worth . In fact, Tom, if you read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Characteristics
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t want running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of the customizer previously, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Resumes prepared.
Font wonderful built-in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it good for developers.
Great active support from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their site, the theme has been around long enough that everything I Googled during the setup process was found inside a few seconds in their forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a new theme right from the box with no customizations to see how quickly the base is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a whole lot of big files, but that is not the case. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring that every file packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of files is not as significant. However, the size is! Take a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout each the premium add-ons. They’re as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe can expect that to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to ensure they do not load on your site. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
Blog
Shades
Copyright
Hooks
Page Header
Spacing
Typography
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more have to use a Child theme. This makes my life so much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this exact minute rather than shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make it possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Tema WordPress
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post you have a great deal of options. You are able to alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default option to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled from the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. However, allow me to show you couple which actually come in handy.
Responsive Columns
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by precisely the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Add custom classes
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You might want to Also catch his incredible WP Show Posts plugin also. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also have it show last modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.

Sections Add-on
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all kinds of things in terms of design. Consider it like a page builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I am in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
Speed Tests
For all those Of those who are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice I changed the whole theme that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty fast, but I spent a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a child motif. Each of the customizations were created using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can create a copy of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress site library. I am happy to allow you to know that now you can install my woorkup motif in your own GeneratePress website with just a single click! It is called the Marketer theme. Get started using a great blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum website, as I do not use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a couple plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal website, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Tema WordPress
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under an hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my websites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce websites ). Once I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP without any child topics, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news is, I finally have a thousand more options to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that want to be able to personalize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something that will immediately look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you want to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier picking out a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a great deal simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll almost certainly need to go in and personalize matters. And though the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you’ll have the ability to see all the changes that you make in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you adequate options, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize pretty much everything about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Layout region, you can configure detailed settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to include
Likewise, The Typography place enables you to control the font to get every single element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also get a thorough area to control the color of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization options from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This level of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But as soon as you understand how the settings come together, you’ll have full control over how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All its attributes, GeneratePress always includes a focus on excellent performance and tidy code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, and it will be about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded topics can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you a sense, I ran a small test.
First, I set up a vacant site using a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test site without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with other topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Tema WordPress
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create different”sections” on a page, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you can select and choose what features you would like to activate.
That Way, you don’t need to slow your site down for a feature that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any among the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most themes, every post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Design meta box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, article featured image, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re able to create the correct baseline for your page builder design, making it effortless to create custom content as needed. Tema WordPress
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re seriously interested in utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so elastic. The free version does not give you almost as numerous settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, which gives you use on unlimited websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the initial year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress after the initial year without renewing — you won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You believe that the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great value.
Wrap-up
As I said, I do not think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your needs for your niche from day one.
But If you’re willing to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you might even have the ability to find a starter website that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics you will find. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any problem making your site load in under one second. Tema WordPress
