Background Statcounter Generatepress
Within the past ten decades, I have used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. However, I still had to perform a lot of customization to allow it to perform and work how I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I’ve found in 10 years. I had been dismissed and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Statcounter Generatepress
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there is not that good, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this case, that was a mistake. The theme currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the features. I will be covering the superior edition of the subject, since it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you read this and so are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t want running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Impressive integration with the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of the customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these really are a great combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built-in.
Tons of filters and hooks that make it great for developers.
Great active support from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that everything I wholeheartedly throughout the setup process was found within a few seconds in their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right out of the box with no customizations to just see how quickly the base is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to generate a lot of big files, but this is not the case. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring every file packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of files isn’t as important. However, the size is! Take a peek at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen the same during each the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file contained. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming round the cornerwe can expect that to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to guarantee they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built, I felt right at home for this. Everything ought to be made this way.
If You’re curious, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is I no more need to use a Child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I will literally update my GeneratePress theme this very moment rather than shed one customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make this possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Statcounter Generatepress
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You are able to alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these choices are enabled from the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. However, let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also made by the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Add Customized classes
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example under:
You might want to Also catch his amazing WP Display Posts plugin too. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also have it show past modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all kinds of things concerning design. Think of it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you likely did not even notice I changed the whole theme that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I invested a great deal of time customizing it. In reality, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid theme. All the customizations were made using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can create a copy of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress blog library. I am happy to allow you to know that now you can install my woorkup theme on your GeneratePress site with only a click! It is known as the Marketer theme. Get started with a fantastic blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal website, since I do not use it to get much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the whole look 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum site, as we just use it for our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Statcounter Generatepress
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under one hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my sites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child topics, my life will be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I now have a billion more options to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users that wish to be able to personalize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load fast.
Since Of that, those who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Need something which will instantly look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to produce a style blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a great deal simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely need to go in and personalize things. And while the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Plenty Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient because you will have the ability to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you adequate options, but should you have GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize pretty much all about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Design area, you can configure comprehensive settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, That the Typography area enables you to control the font to get each and every element on your site, including buttons:
And You also get a detailed area to control the color of each and every element on your website.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you a lot more customization options from the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This level of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But once you realize how the settings come together, you’ll have full control on how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All its features, GeneratePress always has a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading motif. How quickly? To give you a sense, I conducted a little test.
First, I set up a vacant website utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test website without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You perform that same test with different topics, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Statcounter Generatepress
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which allows you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you could select and choose what characteristics you want to trigger.
That Way, you do not need to slow down your site for a feature which you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a new Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which allows you easily import any among those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most topics, each post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta name box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are able to create the proper baseline for your page builder layout, which makes it easy to create custom content as needed. Statcounter Generatepress
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re seriously interested in utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so elastic. The free version does not give you almost as many settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, which gives you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and upgrades following the first year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the first year without renewing — you just won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You believe the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great value.
As I said, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your needs for your niche from day one.
But If you are ready to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you may even have the ability to find a starter website that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will find. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one minute. Statcounter Generatepress
