Intro Simple WordPress Themes
Over the past 10 decades, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I was using MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. However, I still had to perform a lot of customization to allow it to perform and work the way I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I’ve discovered in 10 years. I had been dismissed and am moving all of my websites to GeneratePress. I will enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as several other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Simple WordPress Themes
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I tend to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there isn’t that great, or not supported for long. However, in this circumstance, this was a mistake. The theme currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing something right here.
I Really set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at a number of the qualities. I will be covering the premium version of the subject, since it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t need running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font wonderful built in.
Tons of filters and hooks that make it great for developers.
Great active service from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their site, the theme has existed long enough that everything I Googled during the setup process was found within a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a new theme right out of the box without any customizations to just see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring every record packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the amount of documents isn’t as important. But the size is! Have a peek at a few of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout each the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file contained. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming round the corner, we can anticipate this to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your site. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built-in, I felt at home with this. Everything should be made this way.
If You are interested, I am using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is that I no longer have to use a Child theme. This makes my life much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this very minute and not lose one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Simple WordPress Themes
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a great deal of options. You are able to alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default option to a complete width page, in addition to disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are permitted from the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But allow me to show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by precisely the same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Add Customized classes
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You May Want to Also catch his amazing WP Display Posts plugin too. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also get it show past modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to perform all kinds of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I am in fact using GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For those Of those who are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice that I changed the whole theme that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time customizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a child motif. All the customizations were made using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could make a copy of woorkup to your new GeneratePress blog library. I’m happy to let you know that now you can put in my woorkup motif in your GeneratePress site with only a single click! It’s known as the Marketer theme. Get started using a fantastic blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum website, since I don’t use it for much. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the entire appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal website, as we just use it for our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Simple WordPress Themes
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under an hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all my websites for this (which comprises several EDD e-commerce websites ). After I have my 9 websites all running in GP without any child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing isI finally have a billion more choices to choose from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that wish to be able to customize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a great base to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, those who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will normally pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Combination If…
…you Need something which will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to produce a style blog, you may be happier choosing a niche theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a lot simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely need to go in and personalize things. And though the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular features that explain why GeneratePress is so common.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Performance, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient because you’ll be able to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you decent possibilities, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize nearly everything about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you may configure comprehensive settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography area enables you to control the font for each and every element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also receive a detailed area to control the colour of each and every element on your website.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you a lot more customization options in the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But once you realize how the preferences come together, you will have complete control on how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All of its features, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, which will be about as small as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you an idea, I conducted a small test.
First, I put up a vacant site using a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test website without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You do the exact same test with different themes, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Simple WordPress Themes
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create different”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you could pick and choose what features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you don’t have to slow down your site for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you had to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a fresh Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most topics, each post and page will use the very same settings for the most part. You might have some custom templates or formats — but you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, like your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re in a position to create the correct baseline for your page builder design, which makes it effortless to create custom articles as needed. Simple WordPress Themes
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme is available for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are seriously interested in utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you almost as numerous settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on infinite sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and updates after the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress following the first year without beating — you just won’t get any more updates).
When You believe that the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I mentioned, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your needs for your niche out of day one.
However, If you are ready to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you might even be able to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will find. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any problem making your website load in under one second. Simple WordPress Themes
