Intro Simp WordPress Theme
Over the past 10 decades, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, which was fairly excellent. But I had to do a lot of customization to make it do and work how I wanted it to. A few weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I’ve discovered in a decade . I had been dismissed and am moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I will go into exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Simp WordPress Theme
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. However, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The motif now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the superior edition of the theme, because it’s worth . Actually, Tom, if you read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t need running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these really are a great combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built-in.
Tons of hooks and filters that make it great for developers.
Great active service from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their site, the subject has been around long enough that what I wholeheartedly during the setup process was found inside a few seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I test a brand new theme right from the box with no customizations to see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but this isn’t the situation. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure that every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of files isn’t as important. But the size is! Take a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a programmer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout each of the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file included. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving around the cornerwe could anticipate that to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You’re interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more need to use a Child motif . This makes my life so much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this very minute and not shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Simp WordPress Theme
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a great deal of options. You can change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default option to a complete width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But let me show you couple which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by precisely the same programmer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Add custom classes
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You might want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also get it show past modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you do all sorts of things concerning design. Consider it like a page builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I am in fact utilizing GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For those Of those who are regular readers, you likely did not even notice that I changed the whole motif that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was already pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time customizing it. In reality, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid theme. Each of the customizations were made with the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can create a copy of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress blog library. I’m happy to let you know that now you can put in my woorkup theme on your GeneratePress website with only a click! It’s called the Marketer theme. Get started using a fantastic blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal site, since I do not use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the whole appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a couple plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum website, as we simply use it to our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Simp WordPress Theme
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under one hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my sites for this (which comprises several EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP without any child themes, my entire life will be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news isI finally have a thousand more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users that wish to be able to personalize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a great base to make it load fast.
Since Of that, people who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something which will instantly appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to create a style blog, you may be happier picking out a market theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a lot simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely need to go in and customize matters. And though the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific features that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Plenty Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Performance, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient as you’ll be able to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize pretty much everything about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Layout area, you can configure detailed settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to include
Similarly, That the Typography area lets you control the font to get every single element on your site, including buttons:
And You also get a detailed area to control the colour of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This level of detail may be a little overwhelming if you are a beginner. But as soon as you realize the way the preferences come together, you’ll have full control on how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its features, GeneratePress always has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That together, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I set up a vacant site utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the exact same test website without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You perform the exact same test with other themes, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Simp WordPress Theme
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature which allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you could pick and choose what characteristics you would like to trigger.
That Way, you don’t need to slow your site down for a feature that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you needed to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a fresh Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most topics, every post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta name box for each and every post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your own page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re able to create the correct baseline for your own page builder design, making it easy to create custom articles as needed. Simp WordPress Theme
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif can be obtained at no cost at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you almost as numerous settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly affordable. It costs just $39.95, which gives you use on infinite sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades after the initial year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress after the initial year without renewing — you won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You believe the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic value.
As I mentioned, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your requirements for your market out of day one.
But If you are ready to spend time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you may even have the ability to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will find. Therefore, if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great decision.
