Introduction Retina Logo Generatepress
Over the previous ten years, I have used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. But I had to do a great deal of customization to make it perform and operate how I wanted it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I was blown away and am moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. Retina Logo Generatepress
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there isn’t that great, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this case, that was a mistake. The theme currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at a number of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the superior edition of the theme, because it’s worth . Actually, Tom, in the event that you read this and so are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t need running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of the customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built in.
A lot of hooks and filters that make it great for programmers.
Excellent active service from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the subject has been around long enough that what I Googled during the setup process was found inside a few seconds from their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time for the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but this isn’t the situation. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure that every file packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents is not as important. However, the dimensions is! Have a peek at some of the core GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a programmer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout all the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file contained. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming round the cornerwe could expect this to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to guarantee they do not load on your website. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built-in, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be made this way.
If You’re interested, I am using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no more need to use a young child motif . This makes my life much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this exact moment rather than lose one customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make it possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Retina Logo Generatepress
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a great deal of options. You can change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default option to a complete width page, in addition to disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are permitted from the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here all day. But let me show you couple which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by precisely the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to add responsive columns into any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Add custom courses
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You might want to Also grab his incredible WP Display Posts plugin too. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also have it show past modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to do all kinds of things concerning design. Think of it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I am in fact utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For all those Of you who are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the entire theme that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I spent a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a child motif. All the customizations were created with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could create a replica of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress site library. I am happy to let you know that now you can install my woorkup motif on your GeneratePress website with just a single click! It’s called the Marketer theme. Get started using a fantastic blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal site, as I don’t use it for much. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the whole look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal website, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Retina Logo Generatepress
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my sites to it (which includes some EDD e-commerce websites ). Once I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my life is going to be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I now have a thousand more choices to choose from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that want to have the ability to personalize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any type of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Combination If…
…you Want something which will immediately appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to produce a style blog, you might be happier picking out a niche theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a great deal easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely need to go in and customize things. And though the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific features that clarify why GeneratePress is so common.
Plenty Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you will have the ability to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize pretty much all about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Layout area, you can configure comprehensive settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography place enables you to control the font to get each and every element on your site, including buttons:
And You also receive a thorough region to control the color of each and every element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization options in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This level of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But once you understand how the preferences come together, you will have complete control on how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All its features, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and tidy code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, and it is about as small as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few poorly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you a sense, I conducted a little test.
First, I set up a vacant website using a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the same test site without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% fewer
If You perform that same test with different topics, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. Retina Logo Generatepress
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature that allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create different”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you can select and choose what features you want to trigger.
That Way, you don’t need to slow down your site for a feature that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you had to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a new Site Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which allows you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most topics, each page and post will use the same settings for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a brand new Layout meta box for each and every page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, article title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are able to create the proper baseline for your own page builder design, which makes it easy to create custom articles as needed. Retina Logo Generatepress
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I feel you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as numerous settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly affordable. It costs just $39.95, which provides you use on infinite websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and updates following the first year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You consider that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic price.
As I said, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your needs for your market from day one.
But If you’re ready to spend some time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you might even have the ability to locate a starter website that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will locate. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no problem making your website load in under one minute. Retina Logo Generatepress
