Introduction Premium Themes
Within the past ten years, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I had been using MyThemeShop, that was pretty good. But I still had to do a lot of customization to allow it to do and work how I wanted it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s undoubtedly the finest WordPress theme I have found in a decade . I was blown away and am moving all my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Premium Themes
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there isn’t that good, or not supported for long. However, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The motif currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should get the job done. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the premium edition of the subject, because it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you read this and so are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t need running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these really are a great combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it good for programmers.
Great active service from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their website, the theme has existed long enough that everything I wholeheartedly during the setup procedure was found within a few seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I test a new theme right out of the box with no customizations to see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a lot of big files, but that is not the case. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of files is not as important. However, the dimensions is! Take a peek at some of the core GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a programmer that cares about performance! And I have Seen the same throughout all the premium add-ons. They’re as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file contained. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we can expect this to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you are not using to guarantee they do not load on your website. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built-in, I felt at home for this. Everything ought to be made this way.
If You are curious, I am using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is I no more have to use a young child motif . This makes my life so much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this exact moment rather than lose one customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make it possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress website. Premium Themes
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a great deal of alternatives. You are able to alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default to a full width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled from the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Add Customized courses
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You might want to Also grab his incredible WP Display Posts plugin also. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also have it show past modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to do all sorts of things in terms of design. Think of it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I am in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For those Of you that are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice that I changed the entire motif that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent annually customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was already pretty fast, but I invested a great deal of time customizing it. In fact, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a kid motif. All the customizations were created with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can make a replica of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress blog library. I am pleased to allow you to know that now you can put in my woorkup theme on your own GeneratePress website with just a click! It is called the Marketer theme. Get started using a fantastic blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum website, as I don’t use it to get much. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins that weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum website, as we simply use it for our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty fast. Premium Themes
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under one hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my websites to it (which comprises some EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP without any child topics, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing isI finally have a billion more options to choose from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that want to be able to personalize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load fast.
Because Of that, people who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Want something which will instantly appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you want to produce a style blog, you might be happier picking out a market theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a great deal easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you’ll most likely need to go in and personalize things. And while the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the particular features that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Plenty Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you will be able to see all the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you decent possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize nearly everything about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Design region, you may configure comprehensive settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and change its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to add
Likewise, That the Typography area enables you to control the font for every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also get a thorough area to control the color of every single element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization choices from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This amount of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But as soon as you understand the way the preferences come together, you will have complete control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its features, GeneratePress always includes a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few poorly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you a sense, I conducted a little test.
First, I set up a vacant website using a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the same test site without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You do that same test with other topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Premium Themes
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create different”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own design and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you could pick and choose exactly which characteristics you would like to activate.
That Way, you do not need to slow your site down for a quality that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a fresh Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most topics, every page and post will use the same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Design meta box for every single page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re able to produce the proper baseline for your page builder design, making it effortless to create custom content as needed. Premium Themes
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you almost as numerous settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, which provides you use on infinite websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and updates following the initial year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress after the first year without beating — you won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You believe the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic price.
As I said, I do not think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your needs for your market out of day one.
But If you are willing to spend time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress site. Or, you might even have the ability to locate a starter website that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s among the fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will locate. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no problem making your site load in under one second. Premium Themes
