Background Nice WordPress Themes Free
Over the past ten years, I have used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. However, I had to do a great deal of customization to make it perform and work how I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I have found in a decade . I had been dismissed and am moving all of my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into precisely why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi as well as several other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Nice WordPress Themes Free
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. However, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The motif currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at a number of the features. I’m going to be covering the superior version of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not want running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of this customizer previously, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built in.
Tons of hooks and filters which make it great for developers.
Great active support from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has existed long enough that what I Googled throughout the setup process was found within a few seconds from their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I always test a new theme right out of the box without any customizations to just see how quickly the base is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to generate a lot of big files, but that is not the situation. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure that every record loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents isn’t as important. But the dimensions is! Take a peek at a few of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout all of the premium add-ons. They are as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe could expect this to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to guarantee they don’t load on your website. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built-in, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You’re interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no more need to use a Child theme. This makes my life so much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this very minute rather than shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make it possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Nice WordPress Themes Free
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a great deal of alternatives. You can change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default option to a full width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, lots of these choices are permitted by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Add custom classes
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You might want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin also. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also have it show past modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to do all sorts of things concerning design. Think of it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice that I changed the whole motif that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was already pretty quickly, but I invested a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a child theme. All the customizations were created with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could create a replica of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress site library. I am pleased to let you know that you can now install my woorkup theme on your GeneratePress website with just a click! It is called the Marketer motif. Get started using a fantastic blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum website, as I do not use it to get much. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a couple plugins that weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal website, as we just use it to our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Nice WordPress Themes Free
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my websites to it (which includes several EDD e-commerce websites ). After I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP without any child topics, my entire life will be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news is, I now have a thousand more choices to choose from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users who want to be able to personalize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, people who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Need something that will immediately look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to produce a style blog, you might be happier choosing a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a lot easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll almost certainly need to go in and customize things. And though the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular features that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient as you will have the ability to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize nearly everything about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Design area, you can configure comprehensive settings to your:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to include
Likewise, That the Typography place lets you control the font to get every single element on your site, including buttons:
And You also receive a thorough region to control the colour of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But once you understand the way the preferences come together, you will have full control on how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All its attributes, GeneratePress always has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How quickly? To give you an idea, I ran a small test.
First, I set up an empty site using a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the same test site without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You do the exact same test with other topics, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Nice WordPress Themes Free
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create separate”sections” onto a page, each with their own design and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you can select and choose what characteristics you would like to activate.
That Way, you do not need to slow your site down for a quality that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you needed to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a fresh Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most themes, each post and page will use the very same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Layout meta box for every single page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured image, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to create the proper baseline for your page builder layout, making it easy to create custom articles as needed. Nice WordPress Themes Free
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme is available for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are seriously interested in utilizing GeneratePress, I feel you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, and that gives you use on unlimited sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and updates following the initial year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without beating — you won’t receive any more updates).
When You believe that the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I said, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your needs for your market out of day one.
But If you’re ready to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you may even have the ability to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s among those fastest-loading WordPress topics you will locate. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one second. Nice WordPress Themes Free
