Intro Lightweight WordPress Theme
Within the previous 10 years, I have used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I had been using MyThemeShop, that was fairly excellent. However, I had to do a great deal of customization to allow it to do and operate the way I needed it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I have discovered in 10 years. I was blown away and am moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Lightweight WordPress Theme
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of stuff on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this circumstance, this was a mistake. The motif now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the features. I will be covering the premium edition of the theme, because it’s worth . In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t want running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Impressive integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of this customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it good for developers.
Excellent active service from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their site, the theme has been around long enough that everything I wholeheartedly throughout the setup process was found inside a few seconds from their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right out of the box without any customizations to see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but that is not the case. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of documents is not as significant. But the dimensions is! Take a peek at some of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout each of the premium add-ons. They are as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving around the cornerwe can expect that to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to ensure they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You’re curious, I am using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no longer have to use a young child motif . This makes my life so much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this very minute and not lose one customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make it possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Lightweight WordPress Theme
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post you have a great deal of options. You are able to change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default option to a complete width page, in addition to disable elements.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these options are permitted by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. But let me show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by precisely the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Insert Customized classes
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example under:
You might want to Also grab his amazing WP Display Posts plugin too. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also get it show past modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all sorts of things concerning design. Think of it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For those Of those that are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice I changed the whole theme that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent annually customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I spent a lot of time customizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid motif. All the customizations were created with the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could create a replica of woorkup to your new GeneratePress site library. I’m pleased to allow you to know that now you can put in my woorkup motif in your GeneratePress website with only a click! It’s known as the Marketer motif. Get started with a great blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal site, as I don’t use it for much. As you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the entire appearance 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal website, as we simply use it to our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Lightweight WordPress Theme
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my sites for this (which includes several EDD e-commerce sites). After I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life will be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing is, I now have a billion more choices to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that want to have the ability to customize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a great foundation to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, people who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any type of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Need something which will instantly look perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier picking out a niche theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a lot simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely need to go in and customize things. And while the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is so popular.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient because you’ll be able to see all the changes that you make in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you adequate options, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize pretty much all about your site.
For Example, if you go into the Layout area, you can configure comprehensive settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to include
Likewise, That the Typography area enables you to control the font to get every single element on your site, including buttons:
And You also get a detailed area to control the colour of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you a lot more customization options from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This amount of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you are a beginner. But as soon as you realize how the settings come together, you’ll have full control over how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All of its attributes, GeneratePress always includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you a sense, I conducted a little test.
First, I set up a vacant site using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the same test website without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with other themes, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Lightweight WordPress Theme
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature which allows you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you can pick and choose exactly which characteristics you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not need to slow down your site for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you needed to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a fresh Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any among the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most topics, each post and page will use the very same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Layout meta box for every single post and page:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re in a position to produce the correct baseline for your own page builder design, which makes it easy to create custom content as needed. Lightweight WordPress Theme
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you’re seriously interested in utilizing GeneratePress, I feel you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly affordable. It costs only $39.95, which gives you use on infinite sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and updates after the initial year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress after the initial year without renewing — you just won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You believe the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic price.
As I said, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You desire a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your needs for your niche from day one.
But If you’re willing to spend some time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to find a starter website that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics you will find. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any problem making your site load in under one minute. Lightweight WordPress Theme
