Background Html5 WordPress Theme
Over the previous 10 years, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. But I still had to perform a lot of customization to make it do and operate how I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I’ve found in 10 years. I had been blown away and am moving all of my websites to GeneratePress. I will enter precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Html5 WordPress Theme
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there is not that good, or not supported for long. However, in this case, that was a mistake. The theme now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the qualities. I will be covering the premium edition of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, in the event that you ever read this and so are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not need running. This is one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built in.
Tons of filters and hooks that make it good for programmers.
Excellent active support from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their site, the theme has existed long enough that everything I wholeheartedly throughout the setup procedure was found within a couple of seconds from their forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right from the box without any customizations to see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a lot of big files, but this isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring every file packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of files is not as important. However, the size is! Take a peek at a few of the core GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen exactly the same throughout all the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe could expect that to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you aren’t using to ensure they do not load on your site. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are curious, I am using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is that I no more need to use a young child motif . This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally update my GeneratePress motif this very moment rather than shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Html5 WordPress Theme
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a lot of options. You are able to alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default to a full width page, in addition to disable elements.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But let me show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to add responsive columns into any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Insert Customized courses
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You May Want to Also catch his incredible WP Display Posts plugin too. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also get it show last modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to do all sorts of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For those Of those who are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice that I changed the whole theme that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was already pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a child motif. All the customizations were made with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could create a replica of woorkup for the new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to let you know that you can now put in my woorkup motif in your own GeneratePress website with only a click! It is called the Marketer motif. Get started using a fantastic blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal site, since I do not use it for much. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a couple plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum site, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Html5 WordPress Theme
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all my websites to it (which comprises some EDD e-commerce websites ). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP without any child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best news isI finally have a billion more choices to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that want to be able to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll normally pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Need something which will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you want to create a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a great deal easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll almost certainly need to go in and personalize matters. And while the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the particular features that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient as you’ll have the ability to see all the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize pretty much everything about your site.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you may configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to add
Likewise, That the Typography area lets you control the font for each and every element on your site, including buttons:
And You also receive a thorough area to control the color of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization options in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But once you understand how the preferences come together, you will have complete control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All its attributes, GeneratePress always includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few poorly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a small test.
First, I put up an empty website using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the same test site without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You do the exact same test with other topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. Html5 WordPress Theme
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature that allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you can pick and choose exactly which characteristics you want to activate.
That Way, you do not need to slow down your site for a quality which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you needed to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a new Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most topics, each post and page will use the same configurations for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — however you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta name box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are in a position to produce the correct baseline for your own page builder layout, which makes it easy to create custom content as needed. Html5 WordPress Theme
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme can be obtained at no cost at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you’re seriously interested in utilizing GeneratePress, I feel you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, and that gives you use on infinite sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates following the initial year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without beating — you just won’t get any more updates).
When You believe the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic price.
As I mentioned, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your requirements for your market out of day one.
But If you are ready to spend time altering settings, GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you may even be able to locate a starter website that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s among the fastest-loading WordPress themes you will locate. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one minute. Html5 WordPress Theme
