Intro Get Theme WordPress
Over the previous ten decades, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I had been using MyThemeShop, which was pretty excellent. But I still had to perform a great deal of customization to allow it to perform and work the way I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I’ve found in a decade . I had been blown away and am moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and thicker multicolored themes. Get Theme WordPress
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I have actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there isn’t that great, or not encouraged for long. However, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the qualities. I will be covering the superior edition of the theme, since it’s worth . Actually, Tom, if you ever read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not need running. This is one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Impressive integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of the customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built in.
Tons of hooks and filters that make it good for programmers.
Great active service from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that everything I Googled throughout the setup process was found within a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I always test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a lot of big files, but that is not the situation. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring that every record packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of documents isn’t as important. However, the dimensions is! Have a peek at a few of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen the same throughout all of the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file included. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we could expect that to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you are not using to guarantee they do not load on your website. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built-in, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no longer have to use a young child theme. This makes my life much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this very moment and not shed one customization. The hooks add-on definitely can help make it possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Get Theme WordPress
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a great deal of alternatives. You are able to alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default to a complete width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these options are enabled from the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also made by the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to add responsive columns into any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Insert Customized classes
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example under:
You May Want to Also grab his incredible WP Display Posts plugin too. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also have it show last modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you perform all sorts of things concerning design. Think of it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I am in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the whole theme that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif which I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was pretty fast, but I spent a lot of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a child motif. All the customizations were created using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can create a copy of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress site library. I am happy to let you know that you can now install my woorkup motif in your own GeneratePress site with just a click! It’s called the Marketer theme. Get started with a great blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal website, as I don’t use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the whole look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a couple plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum site, as we simply use it to our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Get Theme WordPress
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my websites to it (which comprises several EDD e-commerce websites ). Once I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP without any child themes, my life is going to be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing is, I finally have a billion more choices to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect alternative for performance-focused users who want to be able to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a great foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, those who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any type of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Want something that will immediately look perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to create a fashion blog, you may be happier picking out a market theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a great deal simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones if you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely will need to go in and customize matters. And though the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific features that explain why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Performance, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you’ll have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize nearly all about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you may configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to include
Likewise, The Typography area lets you control the font to get every single element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also get a thorough region to control the colour of each and every element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization options from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This amount of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But once you realize the way the settings come together, you’ll have full control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its features, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and tidy code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, and it will be about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded themes can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you an idea, I conducted a little test.
First, I put up a vacant site utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad at all! However, GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test website without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with other themes, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Get Theme WordPress
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page building. It lets you create different”sections” on a webpage, each with their own design and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you can select and choose exactly which features you want to activate.
That Way, you don’t have to slow down your site for a quality which you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you had to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a fresh Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most topics, every page and post will use the very same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — however you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a brand new Design meta box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are able to produce the correct baseline for your own page builder layout, which makes it effortless to create custom articles as needed. Get Theme WordPress
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I feel you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as numerous settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly affordable. It costs just $39.95, which provides you use on infinite websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and updates following the first year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress after the initial year without renewing — you won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You consider the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic value.
As I mentioned, I do not think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your needs for your market out of day one.
However, If you are ready to spend some time changing settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you might even be able to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes you will find. Therefore, if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good choice.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no problem making your website load in under one second. Get Theme WordPress
