Intro Generatepress Yoast Breadcrumb
Over the past 10 years, I have used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, that was pretty excellent. But I still had to do a lot of customization to allow it to perform and operate the way I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I have discovered in a decade . I was blown away and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Yoast Breadcrumb
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there isn’t that good, or not encouraged for long. However, in this circumstance, this was a mistake. The motif currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the superior version of the subject, since it’s worth . In fact, Tom, if you read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not want running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built in.
A lot of filters and hooks that make it great for programmers.
Excellent active service from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their site, the subject has existed long enough that what I Googled during the setup procedure was found inside a couple of seconds from their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I test a brand new theme right out of the box without any customizations to just see how fast the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but that is not the situation. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure that every file packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of files is not as important. However, the dimensions is! Take a peek at some of the core GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen the same during all of the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file included. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we could expect that to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to guarantee they don’t load on your website. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built-in, I felt at home for this. Everything should be made this way.
If You’re interested, I am using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no more need to use a young child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this very moment rather than shed one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Generatepress Yoast Breadcrumb
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a great deal of options. You are able to alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default option to a complete width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these options are enabled by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But let me show you couple which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by the same programmer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Add custom courses
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also get it show last modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you do all sorts of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you probably did not even notice I changed the entire motif that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif which I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a child motif. Each of the customizations were made using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could create a copy of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress site library. I’m pleased to let you know that now you can install my woorkup motif on your own GeneratePress website with only a click! It is called the Marketer theme. Get started using a fantastic blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved within my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal site, since I do not use it for much. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the whole look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal site, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty fast. Generatepress Yoast Breadcrumb
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my websites to it (which comprises some EDD e-commerce sites). Once I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP without any child topics, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news is, I now have a billion more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect alternative for performance-focused users who wish to have the ability to customize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a great foundation to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, those who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any type of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something that will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a great deal easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will almost certainly need to go in and customize matters. And though the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular features that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient because you’ll be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you adequate possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize nearly all about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design region, you can configure comprehensive settings to your:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to add
Likewise, The Typography place lets you control the font for every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also get a thorough area to control the colour of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options from the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This amount of detail might be a little overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But once you understand the way the settings come together, you’ll have full control on how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All of its attributes, GeneratePress always has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, and it will be about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded topics can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I conducted a small test.
First, I set up a vacant site using a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the same test website without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You perform the exact same test with different topics, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Generatepress Yoast Breadcrumb
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature that allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create different”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you could select and choose exactly which features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you don’t have to slow down your site for a feature which you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The last, you needed to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a fresh Site Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any among those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most topics, each post and page will use the very same settings for the most part. You might have some custom templates or formats — however you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta name box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re able to produce the correct baseline for your page builder design, making it easy to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Yoast Breadcrumb
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif can be obtained at no cost at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are seriously interested in utilizing GeneratePress, I feel you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as numerous settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite affordable. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the first year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress following the first year without beating — you won’t get any more updates).
When You consider that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic value.
As I said, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your niche from day one.
However, If you are ready to spend time changing settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any type of WordPress site. Or, you may even have the ability to locate a starter website that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s among those fastest-loading WordPress themes you will locate. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great choice.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any problem making your site load in under one second. Generatepress Yoast Breadcrumb
