Intro Generatepress WordPress Theme Demo
Over the past 10 years, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. But I still had to perform a great deal of customization to make it perform and work the way I needed it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I was blown away and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review under. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. Generatepress WordPress Theme Demo
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this circumstance, this was a mistake. The theme now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So clearly Tom is doing something right here.
I Really set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should get the job done. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the features. I’m going to be covering the superior edition of the theme, because it’s worth . Actually, Tom, if you ever read this and so are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not need running. This is one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of this customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these really are a terrific combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built-in.
Tons of filters and hooks that make it good for developers.
Excellent active support from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their site, the subject has been around long enough that what I Googled during the setup procedure was found inside a few seconds in their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a whole lot of big files, but this isn’t the case. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring every record packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of files isn’t as important. But the size is! Have a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen exactly the same during all the premium add-ons. They’re as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming round the corner, we could expect this to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to guarantee they don’t load on your website. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built-in, I felt at home for this. Everything should be made this way.
If You’re interested, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is that I no more have to use a young child theme. This makes my life much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this very moment and not shed one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress WordPress Theme Demo
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of options. You are able to change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default option to a complete width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these options are permitted by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. However, let me show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to add responsive columns to any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Add custom courses
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You might want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also get it show past modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to perform all kinds of things in terms of design. Think of it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For those Of those that are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice that I changed the whole theme that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was already pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time customizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I don’t have a kid motif. Each of the customizations were made using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could create a replica of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to let you know that now you can install my woorkup theme on your GeneratePress site with only a single click! It’s called the Marketer motif. Get started using a fantastic blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum site, since I don’t use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the whole look 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a couple plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal site, as we just use it to our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Generatepress WordPress Theme Demo
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under an hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all my sites to it (which includes some EDD e-commerce websites ). After I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP with no child topics, my entire life will be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing isI finally have a billion more options to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect alternative for performance-focused users that want to be able to customize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a great foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will normally pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something that will immediately look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a great deal easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will almost certainly need to go in and personalize matters. And while the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the particular characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient because you will be able to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you decent options, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize pretty much everything about your site.
For Example, if you go into the Layout area, you can configure detailed settings to your:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like how many widgets to include
Likewise, That the Typography area enables you to control the font to get each and every element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also receive a detailed region to control the color of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you a lot more customization choices from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This level of detail may be a little overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But as soon as you realize the way the settings come together, you’ll have full control on how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All its attributes, GeneratePress always has a focus on excellent performance and tidy code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, which is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That together, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I conducted a little test.
First, I put up a vacant website utilizing a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad at all! However, GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test site without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You perform that same test with different topics, you are going to continue to see that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Generatepress WordPress Theme Demo
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature which allows you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create different”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own design and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you can select and choose exactly which characteristics you would like to activate.
That Way, you do not need to slow down your site for a feature that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a new Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which allows you easily import any among the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most topics, each page and post will use the same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — but you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Design meta box for each and every post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are in a position to create the correct baseline for your page builder design, which makes it effortless to create custom content as needed. Generatepress WordPress Theme Demo
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I believe you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you nearly as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, and that gives you use on unlimited sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and updates after the first year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the first year without renewing — you just won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You believe the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great value.
As I mentioned, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your market out of day one.
But If you are willing to spend some time changing settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you may even have the ability to locate a starter website that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will find. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any problem making your site load in under one minute. Generatepress WordPress Theme Demo
