Intro Generatepress Vs Genesis
Within the previous ten years, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was using MyThemeShop, which was pretty excellent. However, I had to perform a great deal of customization to allow it to perform and work the way I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the finest WordPress theme I’ve found in a decade . I was dismissed and am moving all my sites to GeneratePress. I will go into exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Generatepress Vs Genesis
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there is not that great, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this case, this was a mistake. The theme currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So clearly Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at a number of the features. I will be covering the superior edition of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not need running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of this customizer previously, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these really are a terrific combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built-in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it great for programmers.
Great active service from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their site, the theme has been around long enough that what I Googled throughout the setup process was found within a few seconds in their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how quickly the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a lot of big files, but this isn’t the case. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure that every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of files is not as significant. But the size is! Have a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen the same throughout all of the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file contained. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving round the corner, we can expect that to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate whatever you aren’t using to ensure they don’t load on your site. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are curious, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no more need to use a young child theme. This makes my life much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this exact moment and not lose a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Vs Genesis
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a great deal of options. You are able to change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a full width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, lots of these choices are permitted by the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. However, allow me to show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by precisely the same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Insert Customized courses
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also catch his incredible WP Show Posts plugin too. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also have it show last modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all sorts of things in terms of design. Think of it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I’m in reality utilizing GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For those Of those who are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice that I changed the whole motif that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif which I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was already pretty quickly, but I spent a great deal of time customizing it. In reality, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I don’t have a kid motif. Each of the customizations were created using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can make a copy of woorkup for the new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to allow you to know that you can now put in my woorkup theme on your own GeneratePress site with just a click! It is known as the Marketer motif. Get started using a fantastic blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal website, since I do not use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole appearance 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum site, as we just use it to our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Generatepress Vs Genesis
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my sites to it (which comprises several EDD e-commerce websites ). Once I have my 9 websites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing isI finally have a billion more choices to choose from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that want to have the ability to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load fast.
Because Of that, people who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Combination If…
…you Need something which will immediately appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to produce a style blog, you may be happier choosing a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a great deal simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you’ll almost certainly will need to go in and personalize matters. And while the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you will be able to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you adequate possibilities, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize pretty much everything about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Design region, you may configure comprehensive settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header around and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, That the Typography area lets you control the font for each and every element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also get a thorough area to control the color of each and every element on your website.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This level of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But as soon as you realize the way the preferences come together, you will have complete control over how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All its attributes, GeneratePress always includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a small test.
First, I set up a vacant site using a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad at all! However, GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test website without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You do the exact same test with other themes, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. Generatepress Vs Genesis
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which allows you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you can select and choose what features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow down your site for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a new Site Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most themes, each page and post will use the very same settings for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Layout meta box for each and every post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are in a position to produce the correct baseline for your page builder layout, which makes it effortless to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Vs Genesis
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme can be obtained at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I feel you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so elastic. The free version does not give you nearly as numerous configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite affordable. It costs only $39.95, and that gives you use on infinite websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and updates following the first year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress following the first year without beating — you just won’t get any more updates).
When You consider the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great price.
As I said, I do not think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your requirements for your market out of day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you may even be able to find a starter website that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will find. Therefore, if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no problem making your site load in under one second. Generatepress Vs Genesis
