Intro Generatepress Theme Documentation
Over the past ten decades, I have used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, that was pretty good. However, I had to perform a lot of customization to make it do and operate the way I wanted it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I have discovered in a decade . I was blown away and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I will enter precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi as well as many other lightweight and thicker multicolored themes. Generatepress Theme Documentation
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for many years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of stuff on there isn’t that good, or not supported for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The motif now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the qualities. I will be covering the premium edition of the subject, because it’s worth . In fact, Tom, in the event that you read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t want running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built in.
A lot of filters and hooks which make it great for developers.
Great active support from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their site, the theme has existed long enough that what I Googled during the setup procedure was found inside a couple of seconds from their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right out of the box with no customizations to see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a whole lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring that every record loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of documents is not as important. But the size is! Have a look at some of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen the same throughout each of the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we could anticipate this to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they do not load on your website. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built-in, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You’re curious, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is that I no more need to use a Child motif . This makes my life much easier. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this exact minute and not lose one customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Theme Documentation
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a great deal of alternatives. You can alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default option to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these choices are enabled from the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here daily. However, allow me to show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by the same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Add Customized classes
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You might want to Also grab his incredible WP Display Posts plugin too. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also have it show last modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you do all kinds of things concerning design. Think of it like a page builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For those Of those that are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice I changed the whole motif that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was already pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time customizing it. In fact, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a child theme. All the customizations were made using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can make a replica of woorkup for the new GeneratePress site library. I am pleased to allow you to know that you can now install my woorkup motif in your GeneratePress website with just a click! It is called the Marketer motif. Get started with a great blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum site, as I do not use it to get much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole appearance 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a couple plugins that weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal site, as we simply use it to our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty fast. Generatepress Theme Documentation
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under an hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all my sites for this (which includes some EDD e-commerce sites). After I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP without any child topics, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best news is, I finally have a billion more choices to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect alternative for performance-focused users who wish to be able to customize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load fast.
Because Of that, those who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any type of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Need something that will instantly appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to produce a fashion blog, you may be happier choosing a market theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a lot simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely will need to go in and personalize matters. And though the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific features that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient as you will be able to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you decent options, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize nearly all about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design area, you can configure detailed settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like how many widgets to include
Likewise, The Typography place lets you control the font to get every single element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also receive a thorough region to control the color of each and every element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options in the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This amount of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But as soon as you understand how the settings come together, you will have complete control over how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All of its attributes, GeneratePress always has a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, which is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I put up a vacant website utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the same test website without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You perform that same test with other themes, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Generatepress Theme Documentation
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a webpage, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you could select and choose what features you want to trigger.
That Way, you do not need to slow your site down for a quality which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a new Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most topics, each page and post will use the same settings for the most part. You might have some custom templates or formats — however you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Design meta box for every single post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to produce the correct baseline for your page builder design, which makes it effortless to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Theme Documentation
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about using GeneratePress, I feel you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite affordable. It costs only $39.95, which gives you use on infinite websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the initial year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you just won’t get any more updates).
When You consider the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great value.
As I said, I do not think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your needs for your market from day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend some time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to find a starter website that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics you will find. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any problem making your site load in under one minute. Generatepress Theme Documentation
