Intro Generatepress Stylesheet
Over the past 10 years, I have used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I had been using MyThemeShop, that was fairly excellent. But I still had to perform a great deal of customization to allow it to do and operate the way I needed it to. A few weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I’ve discovered in 10 years. I was dismissed and am moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I will go into precisely why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi as well as many other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Stylesheet
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I have actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this case, this was a mistake. The theme now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the qualities. I will be covering the premium version of the subject, because it’s worth . In fact, Tom, if you read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t need running. This is one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of this customizer previously, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these really are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built-in.
Tons of hooks and filters which make it great for programmers.
Great active service from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their site, the theme has been around long enough that what I Googled during the setup process was found within a couple of seconds from their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I test a new theme right out of the box without any customizations to just see how fast the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time I add everything for this. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to generate a whole lot of big files, but that isn’t the situation. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring that every record loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of documents is not as important. But the dimensions is! Take a peek at a few of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen exactly the same during each the premium add-ons. They’re as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file included. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we could expect that to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you aren’t using to ensure they don’t load on your website. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built-in, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are curious, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no more need to use a young child motif . This makes my life much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this exact moment rather than lose a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make it possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress website. Generatepress Stylesheet
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post you have a lot of options. You can alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default option to a full width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these options are enabled by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. However, let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to add responsive columns to any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Add Customized classes
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also grab his amazing WP Display Posts plugin also. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also get it show last modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you perform all kinds of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice I changed the entire theme that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was already pretty fast, but I spent a lot of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a child motif. All the customizations were made with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could create a replica of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress site library. I’m pleased to let you know that you can now install my woorkup theme in your own GeneratePress site with only a click! It is called the Marketer theme. Get started with a great blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum site, since I do not use it for much. Since you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the entire look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a few plugins that weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum site, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Stylesheet
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my websites for this (which includes some EDD e-commerce sites). Once I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news is, I finally have a thousand more options to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users that want to be able to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load fast.
Because Of that, people who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Combination If…
…you Want something which will immediately appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you want to produce a fashion blog, you may be happier choosing a market theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a lot simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones if you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you’ll most likely need to go in and customize things. And though the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is so common.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient as you will have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you decent options, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize nearly everything about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design area, you may configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to include
Likewise, The Typography area lets you control the font to get each and every element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also receive a detailed region to control the color of each and every element on your website.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you much more customization options from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This level of detail might be a little overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But as soon as you understand the way the preferences come together, you will have full control on how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All its attributes, GeneratePress always has a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, which is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded themes can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I conducted a small test.
First, I set up an empty site utilizing a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test site without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with other topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Generatepress Stylesheet
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature which allows you create custom hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create separate”sections” onto a page, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you could pick and choose what features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not need to slow your site down for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you needed to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most themes, each page and post will use the same settings for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — but you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta box for every single post and page:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured image, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are able to produce the correct baseline for your page builder layout, making it effortless to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Stylesheet
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so elastic. The free version does not give you almost as many settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, which provides you use on infinite websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and updates following the first year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress following the first year without renewing — you just won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You consider the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great price.
As I said, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your needs for your market out of day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you may even be able to find a starter website that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is one of the fastest-loading WordPress themes you will find. Therefore, if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no problem making your site load in under one minute. Generatepress Stylesheet
