Intro Generatepress Sticky Sidebar
Within the previous 10 decades, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I was using MyThemeShop, which was pretty excellent. But I still had to perform a lot of customization to allow it to do and work the way I wanted it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I’ve found in 10 years. I had been blown away and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter precisely why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review under. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi as well as many other lightweight and thicker multicolored themes. Generatepress Sticky Sidebar
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. However, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The motif currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the features. I will be covering the superior edition of the subject, since it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not want running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these really are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built-in.
A lot of filters and hooks that make it good for developers.
Great active support from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that everything I Googled during the setup process was found inside a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but this is not the case. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure every record loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents is not as important. However, the dimensions is! Take a peek at some of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen exactly the same during each of the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file contained. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming round the cornerwe could anticipate that to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate anything you are not using to ensure they do not load on your website. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built-in, I felt at home for this. Everything ought to be designed this way.
If You’re curious, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is I no more need to use a Child theme. This makes my life much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this exact minute and not shed one customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Sticky Sidebar
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a great deal of options. You can change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a full width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. But allow me to show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by precisely the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to add responsive columns into any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Insert Customized courses
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You May Want to Also grab his amazing WP Display Posts plugin too. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also have it show last modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to do all sorts of things concerning design. Think of it like a page builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you likely did not even notice I changed the entire motif that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was pretty fast, but I invested a lot of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid motif. Each of the customizations were made with the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could create a replica of woorkup to your new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to allow you to know that you can now install my woorkup theme in your GeneratePress website with just a click! It is called the Marketer motif. Get started using a great blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved within my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal site, since I don’t use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the entire look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a few plugins that weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal site, as we simply use it to our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Sticky Sidebar
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my websites to it (which includes some EDD e-commerce sites). After I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP with no child topics, my entire life will be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best news isI now have a billion more options to choose from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to personalize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a great foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, those who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Combination If…
…you Want something that will immediately look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to produce a style blog, you may be happier choosing a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a great deal simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely need to go in and personalize matters. And though the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient because you will have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you adequate options, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize pretty much everything about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Layout region, you can configure detailed settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to add
Similarly, That the Typography area enables you to control the font for each and every element on your site, including buttons:
And You also get a thorough area to control the colour of every single element on your website.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This amount of detail might be a little overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But once you realize how the settings come together, you will have full control on how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its attributes, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and tidy code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, and it will be about as small as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the leave obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That together, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a small test.
First, I put up an empty website using a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the same test site without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with different themes, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Generatepress Sticky Sidebar
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create separate”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own layout and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you could select and choose what characteristics you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow down your site for a feature that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which allows you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most themes, each post and page will use the same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a brand new Layout meta name box for each and every page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you’re in a position to create the correct baseline for your own page builder layout, making it easy to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Sticky Sidebar
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you’re serious about using GeneratePress, I feel you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly affordable. It costs only $39.95, and that gives you use on infinite sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and upgrades following the initial year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress after the initial year without beating — you just won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You consider the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great value.
As I mentioned, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your needs for your niche out of day one.
But If you’re willing to spend time altering settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you may even be able to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will locate. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no difficulty making your site load in under one second. Generatepress Sticky Sidebar
