Introduction Generatepress Sticky Menu Logo
Over the past ten decades, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, that was pretty excellent. However, I still had to perform a great deal of customization to make it do and work how I wanted it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I’ve found in 10 years. I had been blown away and am moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi as well as several other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Sticky Menu Logo
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that great, or not encouraged for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The theme now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the superior version of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, in the event that you ever read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not need running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built-in.
A lot of filters and hooks which make it good for programmers.
Great active service from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their site, the theme has been around long enough that everything I wholeheartedly during the setup procedure was found within a couple of seconds from their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right out of the box without any customizations to just see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to generate a lot of big files, but that isn’t the situation. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring every file packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of documents is not as important. But the size is! Take a look at some of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about performance! And I have Seen exactly the same throughout each of the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file contained. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving around the corner, we could expect this to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you are not using to guarantee they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built-in, I felt at home with this. Everything ought to be designed this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no longer have to use a Child motif . This makes my life so much easier. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this exact moment rather than lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make it possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Sticky Menu Logo
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a great deal of alternatives. You are able to alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default option to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these choices are enabled by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here all day. But let me show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Add Customized courses
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example under:
You might want to Also catch his incredible WP Display Posts plugin too. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also get it show last modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you perform all sorts of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I am in reality using GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For those Of you that are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice that I changed the whole theme that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif which I had spent annually customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I spent a great deal of time customizing it. In fact, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a child motif. All the customizations were made using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can make a copy of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress blog library. I’m happy to allow you to know that you can now install my woorkup theme on your own GeneratePress website with just a single click! It is called the Marketer theme. Get started with a fantastic blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum website, since I do not use it for much. Since you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the entire look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a couple plugins that weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum website, as we simply use it for our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Sticky Menu Logo
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I needed it in under one hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my sites for this (which includes several EDD e-commerce sites). After I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP without any child themes, my life will be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing isI finally have a billion more options to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load fast.
Because Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Want something which will immediately look perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to create a style blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a great deal easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will almost certainly need to go in and personalize matters. And while the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific features that clarify why GeneratePress is so common.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient as you will be able to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you decent options, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize pretty much everything about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you can configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to add
Similarly, That the Typography area lets you control the font to get every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also get a thorough region to control the colour of every single element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you much more customization options in the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This level of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But as soon as you understand how the settings come together, you will have complete control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its features, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on exceptional performance and tidy code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, which is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few poorly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the leave obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I conducted a small test.
First, I set up an empty site using a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on exactly the same test website without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with different topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Generatepress Sticky Menu Logo
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature that allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page building. It lets you create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own layout and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you could select and choose exactly which features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow your site down for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you needed to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a fresh Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most topics, each post and page will use the very same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Design meta box for every single post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, article title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re able to produce the proper baseline for your page builder layout, making it effortless to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Sticky Menu Logo
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you’re seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I feel you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you almost as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, and that gives you use on infinite sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates after the first year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you just won’t get any more updates).
When You consider the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic price.
As I said, I do not think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your requirements for your market from day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to locate a starter website that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes you will locate. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one second. Generatepress Sticky Menu Logo
