Intro Generatepress Sticky Footer
Over the previous 10 years, I have used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, that was pretty good. But I still had to perform a lot of customization to allow it to do and operate the way I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the best WordPress theme I have discovered in 10 years. I had been blown away and am moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I will enter exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Generatepress Sticky Footer
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there isn’t that good, or not supported for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The motif currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at a number of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the premium edition of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, in the event that you read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not want running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of this customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these really are a terrific combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built-in.
A lot of hooks and filters that make it good for programmers.
Great active support from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that what I Googled during the setup process was found within a few seconds from their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right from the box with no customizations to just see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to generate a whole lot of big files, but that is not the situation. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of files isn’t as significant. However, the dimensions is! Take a peek at some of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I have Seen the same during all the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file included. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we can expect that to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you aren’t using to ensure they don’t load on your website. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built-in, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be made this way.
If You’re interested, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no longer have to use a young child theme. This makes my life much easier. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally update my GeneratePress motif this very minute and not shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make it possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Sticky Footer
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You can change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default option to a complete width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, a lot of these choices are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here daily. However, allow me to show you couple which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also made by precisely the same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Add custom courses
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example under:
You might want to Also grab his amazing WP Display Posts plugin too. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also have it show past modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to do all kinds of things in terms of design. Consider it like a page builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of you who are regular readers, you likely did not even notice that I changed the entire motif that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was already pretty quickly, but I invested a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a kid motif. All the customizations were created using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can create a replica of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress site library. I’m pleased to allow you to know that you can now put in my woorkup theme in your GeneratePress site with just a single click! It is called the Marketer motif. Get started with a great blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum website, as I don’t use it for much. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the entire appearance 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a few plugins that weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal website, as we just use it for our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Sticky Footer
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under an hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my sites to it (which includes several EDD e-commerce websites ). After I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP with no child topics, my life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best news isI finally have a billion more choices to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to customize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a great base to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, those who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Need something that will immediately look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you want to produce a fashion blog, you may be happier picking out a niche theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a lot simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will almost certainly need to go in and personalize things. And while the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific features that explain why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient as you’ll be able to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you decent possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize pretty much everything about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Design area, you may configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography place lets you control the font to get every single element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also receive a thorough region to control the color of every single element on your website.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you much more customization options from the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But once you understand the way the settings come together, you’ll have full control on how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All of its features, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, which is about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That together, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a small test.
First, I put up a vacant site utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the same test site without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You do that same test with different topics, you are going to continue to see that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Generatepress Sticky Footer
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page building. It lets you create different”sections” on a page, each with their own layout and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you can pick and choose exactly which characteristics you want to trigger.
That Way, you do not need to slow down your site for a feature which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a fresh Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most topics, every page and post will use the very same configurations for the most part. You might have some custom templates or formats — however you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Design meta box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, like your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are in a position to produce the correct baseline for your own page builder layout, which makes it effortless to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Sticky Footer
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you almost as numerous configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly affordable. It costs only $39.95, which gives you use on unlimited websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates following the first year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without beating — you won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You consider that the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic value.
As I mentioned, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your market out of day one.
But If you are willing to spend time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any type of WordPress site. Or, you may even have the ability to locate a starter site that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is among the fastest-loading WordPress topics you will locate. Therefore, if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no problem making your website load in under one second. Generatepress Sticky Footer
