Background Generatepress Sidebar Navigation Toggle
Over the past ten years, I have used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, which was fairly excellent. However, I still had to perform a lot of customization to make it perform and work the way I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s undoubtedly the finest WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I was blown away and am now moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi as well as several other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there isn’t that good, or not encouraged for long. However, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the features. I will be covering the superior version of the theme, because it’s worth . In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t need running. This is one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Impressive integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of this customizer previously, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it great for programmers.
Great active service from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that what I Googled throughout the setup procedure was found within a couple of seconds from their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I always test a new theme right out of the box with no customizations to just see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a lot of big files, but this isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring every record packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the amount of documents isn’t as important. However, the size is! Take a peek at a few of the core GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen the same during all of the premium add-ons. They’re as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving around the corner, we could anticipate this to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you aren’t using to ensure they don’t load on your site. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built, I felt at home with this. Everything should be made this way.
If You’re curious, I’m using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no more have to use a young child theme. This makes my life much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this exact moment and not lose one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make it possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress website. Generatepress Sidebar Navigation Toggle
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You can alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default to a full width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, lots of these options are enabled by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. However, allow me to show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Insert custom classes
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You might want to Also grab his amazing WP Display Posts plugin also. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also have it show past modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to perform all kinds of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I am in fact utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For those Of you that are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice I changed the entire theme that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was already pretty fast, but I invested a lot of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a child theme. All the customizations were made with the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could make a copy of woorkup to your new GeneratePress site library. I’m happy to allow you to know that you can now put in my woorkup motif in your own GeneratePress site with just a single click! It is known as the Marketer theme. Get started with a great blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal site, as I do not use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the whole look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a few plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum website, as we just use it for our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Generatepress Sidebar Navigation Toggle
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my websites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce sites). Once I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP with no child topics, my life will be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news isI finally have a thousand more options to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to personalize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, people who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any type of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Combination If…
…you Need something which will immediately look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to create a fashion blog, you may be happier picking out a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a lot simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll most likely will need to go in and customize matters. And though the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the particular features that explain why GeneratePress is so common.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient as you will be able to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize nearly everything about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Layout region, you can configure comprehensive settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like how many widgets to include
Likewise, The Typography area lets you control the font to get each and every element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also receive a thorough region to control the color of every single element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This level of detail might be a little overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But once you realize how the preferences come together, you will have complete control on how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All of its features, GeneratePress always includes a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, which is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded topics can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That together, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I set up a vacant site using a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test site without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You perform the exact same test with other topics, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Generatepress Sidebar Navigation Toggle
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page building. It lets you create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own layout and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you can pick and choose exactly which features you want to trigger.
That Way, you do not need to slow down your site for a feature that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you needed to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a new Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most topics, every post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — however you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a brand new Design meta box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to create the proper baseline for your own page builder design, making it effortless to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Sidebar Navigation Toggle
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as numerous configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the first year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress after the initial year without renewing — you won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You consider that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great value.
As I said, I do not think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your needs for your niche out of day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you might even be able to locate a starter site that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is among the fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will locate. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one minute. Generatepress Sidebar Navigation Toggle
