Intro Generatepress Sidebar Design
Within the previous 10 years, I have used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I was using MyThemeShop, which was fairly excellent. However, I had to perform a great deal of customization to allow it to perform and operate the way I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I have discovered in 10 years. I had been blown away and am moving all my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as many other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Generatepress Sidebar Design
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I have actually seen it for many years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the premium version of the theme, because it’s worth . In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t need running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built-in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it good for developers.
Great active service from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their website, the subject has existed long enough that what I Googled throughout the setup procedure was found within a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I always test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to see how quickly the base is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a lot of big files, but that is not the case. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure that every file packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of files is not as significant. However, the dimensions is! Take a peek at some of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about performance! And I have Seen the same throughout all the premium add-ons. They’re as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file contained. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming round the cornerwe could expect this to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate anything you are not using to guarantee they do not load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You’re curious, I’m using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no more need to use a Child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this exact moment and not lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make it possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Sidebar Design
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a lot of options. You can change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default option to a full width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these choices are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here all day. However, let me show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by the same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to add responsive columns into any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Insert Customized courses
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You might want to Also grab his incredible WP Display Posts plugin also. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also get it show last modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you perform all kinds of things in terms of design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in reality utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of you who are regular readers, you likely did not even notice that I changed the whole theme that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif which I had spent annually customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I invested a great deal of time customizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I don’t have a kid theme. Each of the customizations were made with the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could create a copy of woorkup to your new GeneratePress site library. I’m happy to allow you to know that you can now put in my woorkup motif in your GeneratePress site with only a single click! It’s called the Marketer motif. Get started using a great blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal site, since I do not use it for much. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a couple plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum site, as we just use it for our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Sidebar Design
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I needed it in under one hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my websites to it (which includes several EDD e-commerce sites). After I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP without any child themes, my life will be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I finally have a billion more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that want to have the ability to personalize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, people who assemble WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Want something that will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to create a style blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a great deal simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones if you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely will need to go in and personalize things. And though the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the particular characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient as you’ll have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you adequate options, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize nearly everything about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Layout area, you may configure comprehensive settings to your:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can utilize a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like how many widgets to add
Similarly, The Typography area lets you control the font for every single element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also receive a detailed region to control the color of every single element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This level of detail may be a little overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But as soon as you realize how the settings come together, you will have full control over how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All its features, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a little test.
First, I put up an empty site using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test website without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You do that same test with different themes, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Generatepress Sidebar Design
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which allows you create custom hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create different”sections” on a page, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you could select and choose what features you want to activate.
That Way, you don’t have to slow down your site for a quality which you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you needed to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a fresh Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which allows you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most themes, each post and page will use the very same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Layout meta name box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you’re in a position to create the correct baseline for your page builder design, making it effortless to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Sidebar Design
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I feel you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, and that gives you use on unlimited sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress after the initial year without renewing — you won’t get any more updates).
When You consider the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic price.
As I mentioned, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your needs for your market from day one.
However, If you are willing to spend time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you may even be able to locate a starter website that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s among the fastest-loading WordPress themes you will find. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no problem making your website load in under one minute. Generatepress Sidebar Design
