Background Generatepress Page Builder Container
Over the past ten years, I have used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, which was pretty excellent. But I still had to do a lot of customization to allow it to perform and operate how I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I’ve discovered in a decade . I was dismissed and am moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I will enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there is not that great, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should get the job done. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the features. I’m going to be covering the superior version of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you read this and so are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t want running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font wonderful built in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it great for developers.
Great active support from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the subject has been around long enough that everything I wholeheartedly during the setup process was found inside a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box with no customizations to just see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents is not as significant. But the dimensions is! Have a peek at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen the same throughout each of the premium add-ons. They’re as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file contained. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving around the cornerwe could expect this to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to guarantee they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built-in, I felt at home with this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You’re curious, I’m using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no longer need to use a Child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this very moment rather than shed one customization. The hooks add-on definitely can help make this possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Generatepress Page Builder Container
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a great deal of alternatives. You can alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default option to a full width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, a lot of these choices are permitted by the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here all day. However, allow me to show you couple which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Add Customized classes
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You might want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also have it show last modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you perform all sorts of things in terms of design. Think of it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in reality utilizing GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For those Of those who are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the entire theme that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I invested a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a child theme. Each of the customizations were made with the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can create a replica of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress site library. I’m happy to allow you to know that now you can install my woorkup motif in your GeneratePress website with just a single click! It is called the Marketer theme. Get started with a great blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved within my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum site, as I don’t use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a few plugins that weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal website, as we simply use it to our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Page Builder Container
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my sites for this (which comprises several EDD e-commerce websites ). After I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP with no child topics, my life will be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing isI now have a thousand more choices to choose from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect alternative for performance-focused users that want to be able to customize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a great foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, those who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something which will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to create a fashion blog, you may be happier picking out a market theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a lot simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you want it to, you’ll most likely need to go in and customize things. And while the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Plenty Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient as you will be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you adequate options, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize pretty much everything about your site.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you can configure detailed settings to your:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to add
Similarly, The Typography area lets you control the font for every single element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also receive a thorough area to control the colour of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you a lot more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This amount of detail may be a little overwhelming if you are a beginner. But once you understand how the settings come together, you will have full control over how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All its features, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and tidy code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That together, and you obtain a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a small test.
First, I put up a vacant site using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the same test website without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You perform that same test with different topics, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. Generatepress Page Builder Container
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create different”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you could select and choose exactly which characteristics you want to activate.
That Way, you do not have to slow your site down for a quality that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you needed to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any among those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most topics, each page and post will use the same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a brand new Design meta box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you’re able to produce the correct baseline for your own page builder design, making it easy to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Page Builder Container
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, which provides you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and upgrades after the first year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you just won’t receive any more updates).
When You consider that the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I mentioned, I do not think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your requirements for your niche from day one.
But If you’re ready to spend some time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to find a starter website that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics you will find. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no problem making your website load in under one second. Generatepress Page Builder Container
