Over the past 10 decades, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, which was pretty good. However, I still had to perform a great deal of customization to allow it to do and operate the way I wanted it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I’ve discovered in 10 years. I was dismissed and am moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review under. And if you are wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as many other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I have really seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of stuff on there is not that great, or not supported for long. However, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The theme now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Really set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the features. I will be covering the superior edition of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you ever read this and so are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not need running. This is one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Impressive integration with the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of this customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these really are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built in.
A lot of filters and hooks which make it great for programmers.
Great active service from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be incredible. Besides have great documentation on their website, the subject has existed long enough that what I wholeheartedly during the setup procedure was found inside a few seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box without any customizations to see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a lot of big files, but that is not the case. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure that every record loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of documents isn’t as important. But the dimensions is! Have a peek at some of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen exactly the same throughout each the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file contained. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe can expect that to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you are not using to guarantee they don’t load on your website. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built-in, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You’re interested, I’m using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is that I no more need to use a Child motif . This makes my life much easier. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this exact moment and not lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make it possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Menu Hover Animation Line Small
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of options. You are able to change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But allow me to show you couple which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to add responsive columns to any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Insert custom classes
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You May Want to Also catch his incredible WP Display Posts plugin also. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also have it show past modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all sorts of things in terms of design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For all those Of you who are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice I changed the whole motif that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was already pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time customizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a child theme. All the customizations were created using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can create a copy of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress site library. I am happy to allow you to know that you can now install my woorkup motif in your GeneratePress website with only a click! It’s known as the Marketer motif. Get started using a great blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum site, since I don’t use it to get much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the whole look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a couple plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal website, as we just use it to our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Menu Hover Animation Line Small
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I needed it in under an hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all my sites to it (which comprises several EDD e-commerce websites ). After I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life will be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing isI now have a billion more options to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users that want to be able to customize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a great base to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, people who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Want something which will instantly look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier picking out a niche theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a lot easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely need to go in and personalize things. And while the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the particular features that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you’ll be able to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you decent options, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize nearly everything about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Layout area, you may configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to add
Similarly, That the Typography area lets you control the font to get each and every element on your website, including buttons:
And You also receive a detailed region to control the color of every single element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization options in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This level of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But as soon as you understand the way the preferences come together, you will have full control over how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All its attributes, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few poorly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How quickly? To give you a sense, I conducted a little test.
First, I put up an empty website utilizing a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test site without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You perform that same test with different themes, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Generatepress Menu Hover Animation Line Small
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which allows you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page building. It lets you create different”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you can pick and choose what characteristics you want to trigger.
That Way, you don’t have to slow your site down for a quality which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The last, you needed to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a new Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most themes, each page and post will use the very same settings for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Layout meta name box for each and every post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, like your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you’re able to create the proper baseline for your own page builder layout, making it effortless to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Menu Hover Animation Line Small
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are seriously interested in utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you almost as numerous settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite affordable. It costs just $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and upgrades after the initial year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you won’t get any more updates).
When You consider the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great price.
As I mentioned, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your requirements for your market out of day one.
But If you are ready to spend some time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to find a starter website that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is among those fastest-loading WordPress topics you will find. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good choice.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no difficulty making your site load in under one second. Generatepress Menu Hover Animation Line Small
