Introduction Generatepress Menu Button
Over the previous ten years, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, that was fairly excellent. However, I still had to do a great deal of customization to allow it to do and work how I wanted it to. A few weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the finest WordPress theme I have found in a decade . I had been dismissed and am moving all my sites to GeneratePress. I will enter precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as several other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Menu Button
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there is not that great, or not supported for long. However, in this case, that was a mistake. The theme now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the features. I’m going to be covering the superior edition of the subject, because it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you read this and so are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not need running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater outcomes in SERPs.
Impressive integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of the customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font wonderful built-in.
A lot of hooks and filters which make it good for developers.
Excellent active service from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have great documentation on their site, the subject has existed long enough that what I Googled during the setup procedure was found within a few seconds from their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time for the fun part! I always test a new theme right out of the box without any customizations to see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but that isn’t the situation. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of documents is not as important. But the size is! Take a look at some of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I have Seen the same during each of the premium add-ons. They’re as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we can expect that to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you are not using to guarantee they do not load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built-in, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are curious, I am using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no more have to use a Child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this very moment rather than shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Menu Button
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You are able to alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable elements.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, a lot of these choices are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. But let me show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to add responsive columns into any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Insert custom courses
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You May Want to Also catch his incredible WP Display Posts plugin too. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also have it show past modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you perform all sorts of things in terms of design. Consider it like a page builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I am in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For those Of you that are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice that I changed the whole motif that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was pretty fast, but I spent a great deal of time customizing it. In fact, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a child motif. Each of the customizations were made using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could make a replica of woorkup for the new GeneratePress blog library. I am happy to let you know that now you can put in my woorkup theme on your own GeneratePress website with just a click! It’s known as the Marketer theme. Get started with a great blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal website, since I don’t use it for much. Since you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole appearance 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum website, as we just use it for our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty fast. Generatepress Menu Button
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under one hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my websites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce websites ). Once I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best news is, I now have a billion more options to choose from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users who wish to be able to personalize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, those who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Combination If…
…you Want something which will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you want to create a fashion blog, you may be happier choosing a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a great deal easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones if you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will almost certainly need to go in and customize matters. And while the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the particular characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient because you will be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize pretty much all about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Design area, you can configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography area enables you to control the font to get every single element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also get a detailed region to control the color of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you a lot more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This level of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But once you realize the way the preferences come together, you will have full control over how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All its attributes, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as small as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few poorly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That together, and you obtain a superfast-loading motif. How quickly? To give you a sense, I ran a small test.
First, I set up a vacant website utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test website without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You perform the exact same test with different themes, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. Generatepress Menu Button
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature that allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create different”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you could pick and choose what features you want to activate.
That Way, you don’t need to slow down your site for a feature which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you had to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a new Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most topics, every post and page will use the very same configurations for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Layout meta name box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, like your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls are the most useful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are in a position to create the correct baseline for your own page builder layout, which makes it effortless to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Menu Button
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme can be obtained at no cost at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I feel you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as numerous settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and updates after the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress after the first year without renewing — you won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You believe the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great value.
As I mentioned, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your requirements for your market from day one.
But If you are ready to spend time changing settings, GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress site. Or, you may even be able to find a starter website that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s one of the fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will find. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your site load in under one second. Generatepress Menu Button
