Background Generatepress Import
Within the past 10 decades, I have used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, which was pretty good. However, I had to perform a lot of customization to make it do and operate how I needed it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I’ve found in 10 years. I had been blown away and am now moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I will go into exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi as well as many other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Import
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there isn’t that great, or not supported for long. However, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The motif now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the premium version of the subject, because it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t need running. This is one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of this customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built-in.
A lot of filters and hooks that make it great for programmers.
Excellent active service from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that everything I Googled during the setup procedure was found within a few seconds from their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I test a brand new theme right from the box without any customizations to see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a lot of big files, but this isn’t the situation. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure every file packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of files isn’t as important. However, the dimensions is! Take a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about performance! And I have Seen exactly the same during all of the premium add-ons. They are as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file contained. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving round the corner, we could expect that to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your website. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built, I felt at home for this. Everything ought to be designed this way.
If You’re interested, I am using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no longer need to use a Child theme. This makes my life so much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this exact moment rather than shed one customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress website. Generatepress Import
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You are able to change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a complete width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these choices are permitted from the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here daily. However, allow me to show you couple which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also made by the same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Add Customized classes
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You might want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also have it show last modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all kinds of things in terms of design. Consider it like a page builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I am in fact using GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For those Of you who are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice I changed the whole motif that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I spent a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I don’t have a kid theme. Each of the customizations were created using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could make a replica of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress site library. I am happy to allow you to know that you can now put in my woorkup motif in your own GeneratePress site with only a click! It is called the Marketer theme. Get started using a great blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum website, as I do not use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the whole appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a couple plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum site, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Import
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my sites to it (which includes some EDD e-commerce sites). Once I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news is, I now have a billion more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that want to have the ability to customize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load fast.
Because Of that, those who assemble WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Need something which will instantly appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to create a style blog, you might be happier picking out a market theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a great deal simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll most likely will need to go in and customize things. And though the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is so common.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you will be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize nearly everything about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Layout area, you can configure comprehensive settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header around and change its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like how many widgets to add
Likewise, The Typography place lets you control the font to get every single element on your site, including buttons:
And You also get a thorough area to control the colour of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you a lot more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This level of detail may be a little overwhelming if you are a beginner. But as soon as you realize how the settings come together, you will have full control on how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All its features, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, which is about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I set up a vacant website using a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad at all! However, GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test website without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You perform the exact same test with other topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Generatepress Import
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you could select and choose what characteristics you want to trigger.
That Way, you do not need to slow down your site for a feature that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you needed to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a new Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most themes, each post and page will use the very same settings for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — but you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Design meta name box for each and every page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to create the proper baseline for your own page builder layout, which makes it easy to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Import
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I feel you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you almost as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly affordable. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades after the initial year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress after the first year without renewing — you just won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You believe that the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic value.
As I said, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your niche out of day one.
However, If you are ready to spend time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you may even be able to find a starter site that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will find. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no difficulty making your site load in under one second. Generatepress Import
