Background Generatepress How To Change Navigation Colors
Over the past 10 decades, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I was using MyThemeShop, that was pretty good. But I still had to do a lot of customization to allow it to perform and operate the way I wanted it to. A few weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I’ve found in a decade . I was dismissed and am now moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. Generatepress How To Change Navigation Colors
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for many years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of stuff on there isn’t that great, or not supported for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The motif currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the features. I will be covering the superior edition of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you ever read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t need running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these really are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built in.
A lot of hooks and filters which make it good for programmers.
Excellent active support from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their site, the theme has been around long enough that what I Googled during the setup procedure was found inside a couple of seconds from their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time for the fun part! I always test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to see how quickly the base is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to generate a lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring that every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of files is not as significant. However, the size is! Take a look at some of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen the same during each of the premium add-ons. They’re as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the cornerwe can expect that to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built, I felt at home for this. Everything ought to be made this way.
If You’re curious, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more have to use a Child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this very moment rather than lose one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make it possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Generatepress How To Change Navigation Colors
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a great deal of options. You are able to change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, lots of these choices are enabled from the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. However, let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Add Customized classes
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also catch his incredible WP Display Posts plugin also. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also get it show last modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all sorts of things in terms of design. Consider it like a page builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of you who are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice that I changed the entire motif that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I invested a great deal of time customizing it. In fact, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a child theme. Each of the customizations were made with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could create a replica of woorkup for the new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to let you know that you can now install my woorkup motif on your own GeneratePress site with just a single click! It is called the Marketer theme. Get started with a fantastic blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum site, as I do not use it to get much. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the entire look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal site, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress How To Change Navigation Colors
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under an hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my websites for this (which includes some EDD e-commerce sites). Once I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I finally have a billion more choices to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect alternative for performance-focused users that want to be able to personalize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a great foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, people who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any type of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Need something which will immediately appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to create a fashion blog, you might be happier picking out a market theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a lot simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you want it to, you’ll most likely need to go in and customize matters. And though the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is so common.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient as you’ll be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize pretty much all about your site.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you can configure comprehensive settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography area lets you control the font for each and every element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also get a detailed area to control the colour of each and every element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization options from the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This level of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But as soon as you understand how the preferences come together, you will have full control on how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All its features, GeneratePress always has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, which is about as small as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a little test.
First, I put up a vacant website using a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad at all! However, GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test website without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You perform the exact same test with different themes, you are going to continue to see that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Generatepress How To Change Navigation Colors
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own layout and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you can select and choose exactly which characteristics you want to activate.
That Way, you do not need to slow your site down for a feature that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you needed to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a new Site Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any among those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most themes, every post and page will use the very same settings for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Layout meta name box for every single page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, like your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re able to produce the correct baseline for your page builder design, which makes it effortless to create custom content as needed. Generatepress How To Change Navigation Colors
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I believe you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on infinite sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and updates following the initial year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you just won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You consider the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic value.
As I said, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your niche from day one.
However, If you’re willing to spend some time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to find a starter site that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s among the fastest-loading WordPress topics you will locate. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your site load in under one minute. Generatepress How To Change Navigation Colors
