Introduction Generatepress Full Width
Over the past ten decades, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, which was fairly good. However, I had to do a lot of customization to allow it to perform and operate the way I wanted it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I have discovered in a decade . I had been dismissed and am moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I will go into exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I’ve attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi as well as many other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Full Width
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there isn’t that good, or not supported for long. However, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The theme currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the features. I will be covering the premium version of the subject, since it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, in the event that you read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not want running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Impressive integration using the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of the customizer previously, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built-in.
A lot of filters and hooks that make it good for programmers.
Excellent active support from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their website, the theme has existed long enough that everything I Googled throughout the setup process was found within a few seconds from their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I test a new theme right out of the box without any customizations to see how fast the base is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure that every record packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents isn’t as significant. However, the size is! Have a look at some of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about performance! And I have Seen the same throughout all the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file included. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving round the corner, we could expect this to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to guarantee they don’t load on your website. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be made this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is that I no more have to use a Child theme. This makes my life so much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this exact minute and not lose a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Generatepress Full Width
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a great deal of options. You can change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default option to a full width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, a lot of these options are permitted from the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. But let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to add responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Insert Customized courses
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You May Want to Also catch his incredible WP Show Posts plugin too. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also get it show past modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all kinds of things in terms of design. Consider it like a page builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I’m in reality utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you likely did not even notice that I changed the entire motif that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time customizing it. In fact, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a kid theme. Each of the customizations were created using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could create a copy of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress site library. I’m happy to allow you to know that now you can put in my woorkup motif in your own GeneratePress website with only a click! It’s known as the Marketer motif. Get started using a great blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved within my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum website, since I don’t use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal website, as we just use it for our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Generatepress Full Width
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under an hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my sites to it (which comprises several EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child topics, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing is, I finally have a thousand more choices to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users who want to be able to customize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, people who assemble WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll normally pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Want something which will immediately look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to create a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a lot easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely need to go in and personalize things. And while the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the particular features that clarify why GeneratePress is so popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient as you will be able to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you adequate options, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize pretty much all about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Layout area, you can configure detailed settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to include
Similarly, That the Typography place lets you control the font for every single element on your site, including buttons:
And You also get a detailed area to control the color of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you much more customization options in the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This amount of detail might be a little overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But once you realize how the preferences come together, you will have complete control on how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All its attributes, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, which will be about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That together, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a small test.
First, I set up an empty site using a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the exact same test site without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You perform that same test with different topics, you are going to continue to see that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. Generatepress Full Width
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a exceptional feature that lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page building. It lets you create separate”sections” on a webpage, each with their own layout and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you can select and choose exactly which characteristics you would like to activate.
That Way, you do not need to slow down your site for a quality that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you had to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most themes, every post and page will use the same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Layout meta box for each and every post and page:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your own page builder
Where These controls are the most useful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to create the correct baseline for your own page builder layout, making it easy to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Full Width
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you’re serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I feel you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so elastic. The free version does not give you nearly as many configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite affordable. It costs just $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates following the initial year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress after the first year without renewing — you just won’t receive any more updates).
When You consider that the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I said, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your requirements for your niche out of day one.
But If you are ready to spend some time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you may even have the ability to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s among those fastest-loading WordPress topics you will find. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your site load in under one minute. Generatepress Full Width
