Introduction Generatepress Free
Within the past 10 years, I have used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was using MyThemeShop, which was fairly excellent. However, I had to do a great deal of customization to make it perform and operate the way I needed it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the finest WordPress theme I’ve found in 10 years. I was blown away and am moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I will go into precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi as well as many other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Generatepress Free
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I have actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there is not that good, or not supported for long. However, in this circumstance, this was a mistake. The motif now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the qualities. I will be covering the superior edition of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you ever read this and so are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not need running. This is one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of the customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built-in.
A lot of filters and hooks which make it great for programmers.
Excellent active support from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that what I Googled during the setup procedure was found inside a few seconds in their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box with no customizations to just see how fast the base is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a lot of big files, but this isn’t the situation. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring every file loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of files isn’t as important. However, the size is! Have a look at some of the core GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same during all of the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file contained. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming round the cornerwe could expect that to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you are not using to guarantee they do not load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be made this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is that I no more need to use a young child motif . This makes my life much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this very moment and not lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely can help make it possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Free
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You can alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default option to a full width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But allow me to show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by precisely the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Insert custom courses
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You May Want to Also catch his amazing WP Show Posts plugin also. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also get it show past modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to do all kinds of things concerning design. Think of it like a page builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I am in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you likely did not even notice that I changed the whole theme that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent annually customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time customizing it. In reality, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I don’t have a kid theme. Each of the customizations were created using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could make a copy of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress site library. I am happy to let you know that you can now install my woorkup motif on your own GeneratePress website with just a click! It’s known as the Marketer theme. Get started with a fantastic blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal site, as I do not use it for much. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the whole look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum site, as we simply use it to our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Generatepress Free
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under one hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all my websites for this (which includes several EDD e-commerce websites ). Once I have my 9 websites all running in GP without any child themes, my entire life will be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing isI now have a thousand more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to personalize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a great foundation to make it load fast.
Because Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Need something which will instantly look perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to produce a style blog, you might be happier picking out a niche theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a lot simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely need to go in and personalize things. And while the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the particular characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you’ll be able to see all the changes that you make in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you adequate options, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize pretty much everything about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design region, you may configure detailed settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to add
Likewise, The Typography area enables you to control the font to get each and every element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also get a detailed area to control the colour of every single element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you much more customization choices from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This amount of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But once you realize the way the preferences come together, you will have full control over how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All its features, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How quickly? To give you an idea, I ran a little test.
First, I set up an empty site using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the same test website without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with different themes, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. Generatepress Free
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature that allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you could pick and choose what characteristics you would like to trigger.
That Way, you don’t need to slow your site down for a quality which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The last, you needed to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a new Site Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most topics, each page and post will use the same settings for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — however you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, post featured image, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you’re able to create the proper baseline for your own page builder layout, making it effortless to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Free
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as numerous settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite affordable. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and upgrades after the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress following the initial year without beating — you just won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You consider that the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic price.
As I said, I do not think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your requirements for your niche from day one.
However, If you are willing to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you may even have the ability to locate a starter website that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will locate. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no problem making your website load in under one second. Generatepress Free
