Intro Generatepress Footer
Over the past ten years, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. But I had to perform a lot of customization to make it perform and operate how I needed it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the finest WordPress theme I’ve found in 10 years. I had been blown away and am now moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I will enter precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review under. And if you are wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Footer
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I have actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there isn’t that great, or not supported for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The theme now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should get the job done. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the features. I’m going to be covering the superior version of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t want running. This is one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built-in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it good for developers.
Great active service from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their site, the subject has existed long enough that everything I Googled during the setup procedure was found inside a couple of seconds from their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time for the fun part! I test a brand new theme right from the box with no customizations to see how quickly the base is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the amount of documents isn’t as significant. But the dimensions is! Have a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout all of the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe can anticipate that to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to guarantee they don’t load on your website. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are interested, I am using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no longer have to use a Child motif . This makes my life much easier. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this exact minute and not lose one customization. The hooks add-on definitely can help make this possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Footer
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a great deal of alternatives. You can change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default option to a full width page, in addition to disable elements.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are permitted by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. However, allow me to show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also made by precisely the same programmer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to add responsive columns to any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Add custom classes
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You might want to Also catch his incredible WP Show Posts plugin also. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also have it show past modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all sorts of things in terms of design. Consider it like a page builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I am in reality utilizing GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For those Of you that are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the whole theme that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was already pretty fast, but I spent a great deal of time customizing it. In reality, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I don’t have a child motif. Each of the customizations were made with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can make a copy of woorkup to your new GeneratePress site library. I’m pleased to let you know that you can now put in my woorkup motif in your own GeneratePress site with just a click! It’s known as the Marketer theme. Get started using a fantastic blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal site, since I don’t use it to get much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal site, as we simply use it to our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Footer
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my websites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce websites ). After I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP without any child themes, my life will be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I finally have a thousand more choices to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect alternative for performance-focused users that want to be able to personalize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, people who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Combination If…
…you Want something that will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a niche theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a great deal simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely will need to go in and personalize matters. And while the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific features that explain why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient as you’ll be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize nearly everything about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design region, you can configure comprehensive settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to add
Likewise, The Typography place lets you control the font for every single element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also receive a detailed area to control the colour of each and every element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This amount of detail may be a little overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But once you realize the way the preferences come together, you’ll have full control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All its attributes, GeneratePress always includes a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How quickly? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I put up an empty site utilizing a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test website without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You perform the exact same test with different themes, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Generatepress Footer
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you can select and choose exactly which features you would like to activate.
That Way, you do not need to slow down your site for a feature which you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you had to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a fresh Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most themes, each post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Layout meta name box for every single post and page:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, like your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are in a position to create the correct baseline for your page builder design, which makes it effortless to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Footer
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I feel you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you almost as many settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite affordable. It costs only $39.95, and that gives you use on infinite websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the first year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress after the initial year without beating — you just won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You consider that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I said, I do not think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your needs for your niche from day one.
But If you’re ready to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you may even be able to find a starter website that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s among those fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will find. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no problem making your website load in under one minute. Generatepress Footer
