Introduction Generatepress Export Customizer Settings
Within the previous 10 years, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, that was fairly excellent. However, I still had to do a great deal of customization to make it perform and work the way I needed it to. A few weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the finest WordPress theme I’ve found in a decade . I was blown away and am now moving all of my websites to GeneratePress. I will enter precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review under. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and thicker multicolored themes. GeneratePress Review
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for many years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that great, or not encouraged for long. However, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should get the job done. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the features. I’m going to be covering the premium edition of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, in the event that you read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Features
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not need running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of this customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these really are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Translation ready.
Font awesome built in.
A lot of filters and hooks which make it good for programmers.
Great active service from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their website, the theme has existed long enough that what I Googled throughout the setup process was found within a few seconds in their forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time for the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box with no customizations to just see how quickly the base is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to generate a whole lot of big files, but this isn’t the situation. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure every record packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the amount of files is not as significant. But the size is! Take a peek at some of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen the same throughout each of the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving around the cornerwe could expect this to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your site. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built-in, I felt at home with this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this site:
Website
Colors
Copyright
Hooks
Page Header
Spacing
Typography
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no longer have to use a Child motif . This makes my life much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this very minute rather than lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make this possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Export Customizer Settings
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a lot of options. You are able to alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable elements.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, a lot of these choices are permitted by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here all day. But let me show you couple which really come in handy.
Responsive Columns
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Add Customized classes
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also catch his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also get it show past modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.

Sections Add-on
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all sorts of things in terms of design. Think of it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I am in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks like a site.
Speed Tests
For all those Of those that are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the whole theme that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was already pretty quickly, but I invested a lot of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a child theme. All the customizations were made with the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could create a copy of woorkup for the new GeneratePress site library. I’m happy to allow you to know that you can now put in my woorkup motif on your GeneratePress website with only a click! It is called the Marketer motif. Get started using a great blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum website, since I do not use it for much. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the entire look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a couple plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum website, as we just use it to our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Generatepress Export Customizer Settings
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all my sites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child topics, my life will be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news isI finally have a thousand more choices to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users who want to have the ability to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, those who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Need something that will immediately look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to create a style blog, you may be happier choosing a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a great deal simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you’ll most likely need to go in and customize matters. And while the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular features that clarify why GeneratePress is so common.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient as you will be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you adequate options, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize nearly all about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you may configure comprehensive settings to your:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to add
Likewise, That the Typography place lets you control the font to get every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also receive a detailed region to control the colour of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you are a beginner. But as soon as you understand the way the settings come together, you will have complete control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All of its features, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on excellent performance and tidy code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That together, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a little test.
First, I put up a vacant website using a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the same test site without altering anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% fewer
If You perform that same test with different topics, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Generatepress Export Customizer Settings
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you can pick and choose what features you want to activate.
That Way, you don’t need to slow down your site for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a fresh Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most themes, every page and post will use the same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Layout meta box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls are the most useful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are in a position to create the correct baseline for your page builder layout, which makes it effortless to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Export Customizer Settings
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme is available for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I feel you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so elastic. The free version does not give you almost as many settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite affordable. It costs only $39.95, which gives you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates following the first year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without beating — you just won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You believe that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic value.
Conclusion
As I said, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You desire a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your requirements for your market out of day one.
But If you’re ready to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you might even be able to find a starter website that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will find. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any problem making your website load in under one second. Generatepress Export Customizer Settings
