Introduction Generatepress Eve
Over the past ten decades, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, that was fairly good. However, I still had to perform a lot of customization to allow it to perform and operate the way I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I have discovered in a decade . I was blown away and am moving all my sites to GeneratePress. I will go into exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as several other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Eve
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there is not that great, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this case, that was a mistake. The theme currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the premium version of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, in the event that you read this and so are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t want running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built in.
Tons of hooks and filters which make it great for developers.
Excellent active service from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that everything I Googled throughout the setup process was found within a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time for the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box without any customizations to see how fast the base is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a lot of big files, but that isn’t the situation. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on making sure every file packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents isn’t as significant. But the dimensions is! Take a peek at some of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen exactly the same during each the premium add-ons. They’re as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file contained. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming round the cornerwe could anticipate that to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they do not load on your site. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built, I felt at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is I no longer have to use a Child motif . This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I will literally update my GeneratePress theme this very moment and not lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make it possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Eve
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You can change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, lots of these options are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. But allow me to show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Add custom courses
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also catch his amazing WP Show Posts plugin also. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also have it show past modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you perform all kinds of things in terms of design. Consider it like a page builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For those Of you who are regular readers, you likely did not even notice I changed the entire theme that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was pretty fast, but I invested a lot of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a kid theme. All the customizations were created using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can make a copy of woorkup for the new GeneratePress site library. I am happy to allow you to know that now you can put in my woorkup theme in your own GeneratePress website with just a single click! It’s called the Marketer motif. Get started using a fantastic blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum site, since I don’t use it for much. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the whole look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a few plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal site, as we just use it to our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Eve
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all my websites to it (which includes some EDD e-commerce websites ). Once I’ve got my 9 websites all running in GP without any child themes, my entire life will be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing isI finally have a billion more options to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users who want to be able to customize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, people who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any type of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something that will instantly look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to create a style blog, you might be happier choosing a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a lot simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely need to go in and customize things. And while the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient because you will be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you decent possibilities, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize pretty much all about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you can configure detailed settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to add
Likewise, The Typography place enables you to control the font to get every single element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also get a thorough region to control the color of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you much more customization options from the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This level of detail might be a little overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But as soon as you understand the way the settings come together, you’ll have complete control on how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its features, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on exceptional performance and tidy code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, and it is about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded topics can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That together, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you an idea, I conducted a little test.
First, I set up an empty website utilizing a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad at all! However, GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test website without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You perform that same test with other themes, you are going to continue to see that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Generatepress Eve
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create different”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you could pick and choose what features you want to trigger.
That Way, you don’t need to slow your site down for a quality which you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you needed to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a new Site Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most themes, each post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — however you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Design meta box for each and every post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are in a position to create the correct baseline for your page builder design, making it easy to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Eve
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as numerous configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, which gives you use on infinite websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and updates after the first year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress following the initial year without beating — you just won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You believe that the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great value.
As I mentioned, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your requirements for your niche from day one.
However, If you’re willing to spend time changing settings, GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you may even have the ability to find a starter website that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is among the fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will find. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good choice.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no difficulty making your website load in under one second. Generatepress Eve
