Intro Generatepress Elements Module
Within the previous 10 years, I have used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, which was fairly good. But I had to do a lot of customization to make it do and work the way I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I have discovered in 10 years. I had been dismissed and am moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Elements Module
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there isn’t that great, or not encouraged for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The theme currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the qualities. I will be covering the superior version of the subject, because it’s worth . Actually, Tom, if you ever read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t need running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built in.
A lot of hooks and filters which make it good for programmers.
Great active support from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their site, the subject has existed long enough that what I wholeheartedly during the setup process was found within a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right from the box with no customizations to see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a lot of big files, but this is not the situation. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring that every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of documents isn’t as important. But the dimensions is! Have a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout each of the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file contained. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming round the cornerwe could expect that to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular layout. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you are not using to ensure they do not load on your website. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built, I felt at home for this. Everything should be made this way.
If You are curious, I am using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is that I no more need to use a Child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this exact minute and not lose a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Generatepress Elements Module
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a lot of options. You are able to alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default option to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, a lot of these choices are enabled by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. However, let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Add Customized classes
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example under:
You might want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin also. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also get it show last modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all sorts of things in terms of design. Consider it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For all those Of those who are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the whole theme that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty fast, but I spent a lot of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a child motif. All the customizations were made using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could make a copy of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress blog library. I am pleased to let you know that you can now install my woorkup motif in your GeneratePress site with only a click! It’s known as the Marketer motif. Get started using a fantastic blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum site, as I don’t use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a couple plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum website, as we just use it to our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Elements Module
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all my websites to it (which includes some EDD e-commerce websites ). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my life will be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best news is, I now have a thousand more options to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users who want to have the ability to customize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a great base to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll normally pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Need something which will instantly appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to produce a style blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a great deal easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely need to go in and personalize matters. And though the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is so common.
Plenty Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient as you will be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize nearly all about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you can configure comprehensive settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to add
Likewise, The Typography place enables you to control the font for each and every element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also get a thorough area to control the color of every single element on your website.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you much more customization options in the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This amount of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But once you realize how the settings come together, you will have complete control on how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All of its attributes, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That together, and you obtain a superfast-loading motif. How quickly? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I set up a vacant website utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the same test website without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with different themes, you are going to continue to see that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Generatepress Elements Module
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create custom hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you could select and choose what characteristics you want to activate.
That Way, you do not need to slow your site down for a feature that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The last, you had to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most themes, every post and page will use the very same configurations for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Layout meta name box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, article title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls are the most useful is if you are using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are in a position to produce the proper baseline for your page builder layout, which makes it effortless to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Elements Module
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme can be obtained at no cost at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite affordable. It costs just $39.95, and that provides you use on infinite sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates after the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you won’t receive any more updates).
When You believe that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic value.
As I said, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your requirements for your market from day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend some time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you may even have the ability to find a starter website that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will locate. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no problem making your site load in under one minute. Generatepress Elements Module
