Introduction Generatepress Disable Sidebar Site Wide
Over the past 10 decades, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I was using MyThemeShop, which was fairly good. But I had to do a great deal of customization to make it perform and work how I wanted it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I have discovered in 10 years. I had been dismissed and am now moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I will go into exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of stuff on there is not that great, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the superior edition of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t want running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Impressive integration using the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of the customizer previously, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built in.
A lot of hooks and filters which make it great for programmers.
Great active service from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also incredible. Besides have great documentation on their site, the theme has existed long enough that everything I Googled throughout the setup procedure was found within a few seconds in their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time for the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right from the box without any customizations to see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a lot of big files, but that is not the case. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring every record loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the amount of documents isn’t as important. However, the size is! Take a peek at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen exactly the same during each the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we can expect this to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to guarantee they don’t load on your website. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script supervisor built-in, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are curious, I am using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no longer have to use a young child theme. This makes my life so much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this exact moment and not lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make this possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Disable Sidebar Site Wide
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You can alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default to a full width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these options are permitted by the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But allow me to show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by precisely the same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to add responsive columns into any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Insert Customized classes
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also have it show last modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you perform all kinds of things concerning design. Think of it like a page builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For all those Of those that are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice I changed the entire motif that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop theme was pretty fast, but I invested a lot of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I have gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid theme. All the customizations were created using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could create a replica of woorkup for the new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to let you know that you can now put in my woorkup theme on your GeneratePress website with just a single click! It’s known as the Marketer motif. Get started with a fantastic blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum website, as I don’t use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal site, as we just use it for our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Disable Sidebar Site Wide
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I needed it in under one hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my websites to it (which comprises several EDD e-commerce websites ). Once I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing isI finally have a thousand more options to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users who want to be able to personalize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, people who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Need something which will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to create a fashion blog, you may be happier choosing a market theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a great deal easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones if you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will almost certainly need to go in and personalize things. And though the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the particular characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is so common.
Plenty Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient as you’ll be able to see all the changes that you make in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you decent possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize pretty much everything about your site.
For Example, if you go into the Design area, you can configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, That the Typography place enables you to control the font for each and every element on your site, including buttons:
And You also receive a thorough area to control the colour of every single element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options in the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This level of detail may be a little overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But once you realize how the settings come together, you’ll have full control on how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All its attributes, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I put up an empty website using a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad at all! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test site without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with different themes, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Generatepress Disable Sidebar Site Wide
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create different”sections” on a webpage, each with their own design and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you can select and choose exactly which features you would like to activate.
That Way, you don’t have to slow your site down for a feature that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The last, you needed to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any among the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most themes, each post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — however you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Layout meta name box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured image, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are able to create the correct baseline for your own page builder layout, making it effortless to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Disable Sidebar Site Wide
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you almost as numerous configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on infinite sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and updates following the first year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you just won’t receive any more updates).
When You believe that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic value.
As I said, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your requirements for your niche out of day one.
However, If you are ready to spend some time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you might even be able to locate a starter website that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics you will locate. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one second. Generatepress Disable Sidebar Site Wide
